making new languages

What are the groups who have invented their own language to sing?
Like the way Christian Vander invented Kobaïan for Magma, or how Sigur Rós made their own gibberish language based on Icelandic, those are the only two I know. I am very interested in any other musicians who have built their own languages. (I do NOT want songs sung in languages composed by other people outside the band. I do not care if some power metal bands sing in Scandinavian Tolkien's Elvish or something. Only languages made by musicians themselves, please.)
The crappy groups pop punk like Jonah Fools, etc. .. Only complete and utter morons with no taste in music can understand that shit.

How New Languages Emerge $76.48 New languages are constantly emerging, as existing languages diverge into different forms. To explain this fascinating process, we need to understand how languages change and how they emerge in children. In this pioneering study, David Lightfoot explains how languages come into being, arguing that children are the driving force. He explores how new systems arise, how they are acquired by children, and how adults and children play different, complementary roles in language change. Lightfoot makes an important distinction between ‘external language’ (language as it exists in the world), and ‘internal language’ (language as represented in an individual’s brain). By examining the interplay between the two, he shows how children are ‘cue-based’ learners, who scan their external linguistic environment for new structures, making sense of the world outside in order to build their internal language. Engaging and original, this book offers a pathbreaking new account of language acquisition, variation and change. |

The book makes a strong contribution to linguistic theory and to our understanding of the Celtic languages. |

Languages of Class $37.48 This collection of essays by Gareth Stedman Jones proposes a different way of seeing both historians’ analytical conceptions of ‘class’, and the actual manifestation of class in the history of English politics and English culture since the 1830s. As the progenitor of the first generally acknowledged working-class movement, the English working class provided the initial empirical basis for not only the original Marxist theory of modern industry and proletarian revolution, but also subsequent historians’ reactions against, or adaptations of, the Marxist theory of class. In Languages of Class Gareth Stedman Jones draws a distinction between two conceptions of class: the everyday and commonplace perception of its pervasiveness in England, and the Marxist idea of its revolutionary significance. He proceeds to challenge the predominant conceptions of the meaning and development of ‘class consciousness’ by stressing the political and discursive conditions in which particular languages appeared and receded. Among the themes of individual essays in the book are a rethinking of ‘the making of the English working class’ and the phenomenon of Chartism, a novel exploration of the formation and components of ‘working-class culture’, and, in the light of these, a new approach to understanding the history of the Labour Party. |

The Five Love Languages $20.48 Married people experience love most strongly through five love languages–quality time, words of encouragement, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. With thoughtfulness and a gee-whiz tone that works well in all his audios, Gary Chapman aims his insights at men who want more from marriage, as well as those who have more to give. He’s a humble teacher, describing the five languages with satisfying examples from his counseling practice and framing his ideas as suggestions. Without making light of the work a marriage requires, he’ll convince most men that, if they love their wives, they can easily express it in ways that can make a marriage truly special for everybody. |

The Celtic Languages (Routledge Language Familydescriptions) $45.48 This is the first modern, scholarly, detailed account of the Celtic languages found in one volume. The need for such a book has grown in recent years owing to the marked increase in interest in this important language-family on the part of linguists worldwide. The Celtic languages have various unique features, both structural and sociolinguistic, both inside and outside the Indo-European linguistic situation, that make them especially worthy of study. The languages examined are Gaulish, Irish, Scots Gaelic, Manx, Welsh, Breton, and Cornish. The Celtic Languages discusses both the structural as well as the sociolinguistic aspect of the study of these languages. On the structural side, features such as initial consonant mutation, verb-subject-object sentences, the inflection of prepositions, and pre-sentential particles mark this group of languages, separating it from other Indo-European language groups. On the sociolinguistic side, the book discusses the unique fact that it is the only language group to consist solely of `minority languages’. All other groups contain at least one major language recognized as an official language of a nation state or of an autonomous region. This book discusses the Celtic languages historically, structurally and sociolinguistically, making it an excellent resource for all students and teachers of cultural studies and the Celtic language, as well as students of general linguistics. The historical sections include the origin and history of the Celtic languages, their spread and their retreat, present-day distribution, and a sketch of the extant and recently extinct languages. The structural sections include lexis. The sociolinguistic sections include domains of and usage, maintenance, and prospects for survival. _ |

Learning Artificial Languages $90.48 If Universal Grammar (UG) can aid adult second language acquisition an important question arises: are linguistic principles that are not active in the native language also accessible to second language learners? This question of adult accessibility to UG is addressed by investigating whether a specific phonological principle that does not exist in the subjects’ native language is accessible to adult learners. Artificial languages were constructed to compare the acquisition of a stress system that follows a natural phonological principle with one that is almost identical to the same principle, but differs in one feature, thus making it an "unnatural" system. If second language learners have access to innate universal linguistic principles they should be better able to learn the natural rule over the unnatural one. The positive results lend support to the idea of adult second language learners having access to UG. This book should be of interest to educators and researchers in the fields of artificial language learning, second language acquisition and phonological stress or those with a general interest in laboratory phonology. |

The Phonology of Armenian (The Phonology of the World’s Languages) $271.98 Armenian is geographically one of the most widespread languages of the world, with distinct dialects located as far west as Poland and as far east as India. It has a rich literary history dating from the fourth-century translation of the Bible into Classical Armenian. It is one of the most linguistically divergent of the Indo-European languages, having undergone a host of complicated phonological, morphological, and syntactic changes that continue to resist satisfactory analysis. However, the language has yet to receive a comprehensive treatment by theoretical linguists. Bert Vaux remedies this problem, bringing Armenian into the sphere of phonological discussion by making available to Western readers the results of Armenological work published in Armenian and Russian, and by presenting theoretical analyses of many of the more striking phonological phenomena described in these sources or culled from the author’s fieldwork. The topics addressed include syllabification, stress assignment, vowel harmony, feature geometry, consonantvowel interactions, and prosodic structure. Series Information: The Phonology of the World’s Languages Series Editor: Professor Jacques Durand, Universite de Toulouse-le-Mirail Series ISBN: 0-19-961355-9 Series Description: The phonology of most languages has until now been available only in a fragmented way, through unpublished theses, or articles scattered in more or less accessible journals. Each volume in this series will offer an extensive treatment of the phonology of one language within a modern theoretical perspective and will provide comprehensive references to recent and more classical studies of the language. |

Languages of Theatre Shaped by Women $10 Addressing issues of feminism and representation, this book provides a fresh and thorough consideration of the status and potential of Women’s theatre today. The authors explore a range of different approaches to the languages of theatre, including translation and interpretation of the art form, along with languages, performance work, body language and gesture. Considered alongside the related social issues of race, class and dialect, the following questions emerge: What is the role of language in theatre today? Whose language is English; what other languages do women making theatre use? What does it mean to write about, photograph and video live performance? What is the future for women’s theatre in an international context increasingly united by new technologies but divided by new issues of cultural diversity? Goodman and de Gay analysis covers issues that are central to current courses in Theatre and Performance and Women’s Studies. They assess the forms which women as theatre-makers have chosen to explore in the age of new technology, and look at some of the different definitions of ‘theory’ offered by theatre-makers and critics including Caryl Churchill, Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigiray and Julia Kristeva. |

African Languages in a Digital Age $18 With increasing numbers of computers and penetration of the Internet around the world, localization of the technology and the content it carries into the many languages people speak is becoming an ever more important area for discussion and action. Localization, simply put, includes translation and cultural adaptation of user interfaces and software applications, as well as creation and translation of internet content in diverse languages. It is essential in making information and communication technology more accessible to the populations of the poorer countries, increasing its relevance to their lives, needs, and aspirations, and ultimately in bridging the ôdigital divide.ö Localization is a new and growing field of inquiry. This book identifies issues, concerns, priorities, and lines of research and is intended as a baseline study in defining localization in the African context and how it is important for development and education in the long term. THE AUTHOR Don Osborn is the Founder of the Bisharat Language, Technology & Development Initiative. He is a former Associate Director for Agriculture, Peace Corps, Niger, and led the PanAfrican Localisation project from 2005 to 2008. |

Languages and Their Status $3.98 An introduction both to languages themselves and to their social role, Languages and Their Status gives insight into the meaning, value, and function of language within culture and into the ways language behavior varies and changes. It examines the part languages play in the evolution and structure of communities and, in turn, the ways languages are shaped by the social forces impinging on their speakers. Each chapter discusses what it means to be a speaker of a particular language and puts that language in context among the languages of the world. This volume is complemented by a second volume entitledLanguages and Their Speakers, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press. |

|
The Papuan Languages of New Guinea $49.98 This introduction to the descriptive and historical linguistics of the Papuan languages of New Guinea provide an accessible account of one of the richest and most diverse linguistic situations in the world. The Papuan languages number over 700 (or 20 per cent of the world’s total) in more than sixty language families. Less than a quarter of the individual languages have yet been adequately documented, and in this sense William Foley’s book might be considered premature. However, in the search for language universals and generalisations in linguistic typology, it would be foolhardy to neglect the information that is available. In this respect alone, the present volume, systematically organised on mainly typology principles, is particularly timely and useful. In addition, the processes of linguistic diffusion are present in New Guinea to an extent probably paralleled elsewhere on the globe. The Papuan Languages of New Guinea will be of interest not only to general and comparative linguists and to typologists, but also to sociolinguists and anthropologists for the information it provides on the social dynamics of language content. |

Community Languages $44.98 Without even considering the 150 Aboriginal languages still spoken, Australia has an unparalleled mix of languages other than English in common usage, languages often described by the term ‘community’. Drawing on census data and other statistics, this book addresses the current suitation of community languages in Australia, analysing which are spoken, by whom, and whereabouts. It focuses on three main issues: how languages other than English are maintained in an English speaking environment, how the structure of the languages themselves changes over time, and how the government has responded to such ethnolinguistic diversity. At a time of unprecedented awareness of these languages within society and a realisation of the importance of mutlilingualism in business, this book makes a significant contribution to understanding the role of community languages in shaping the future of Australian society. |

Culture Making $16.48 It is not enough to condemn culture. Nor is it sufficient merely to critique culture or to copy culture. Most of the time, we just consume culture. But the only way to change culture is to create culture. Andy Crouch unleashes a stirring manifesto calling Christians to be culture makers. For too long, Christians have had an insufficient view of culture and have waged misguided "culture wars." But we must reclaim the cultural mandate to be the creative cultivators that God designed us to be. Culture is what we make of the world, both in creating cultural artifacts as well as in making sense of the world around us. By making chairs and omelets, languages and laws, we participate in the good work of culture making. Crouch unpacks the complexities of how culture works and gives us tools for cultivating and creating culture. He navigates the dynamics of cultural change and probes the role and efficacy of our various cultural gestures and postures. Keen biblical exposition demonstrates that creating culture is central to the whole scriptural narrative, the ministry of Jesus and the call to the church. He guards against naive assumptions about "changing the world," but points us to hopeful examples from church history and contemporary society of how culture is made and shaped. Ultimately, our culture making is done in partnership with God’s own making and transforming of culture. A model of his premise, this landmark book is sure to be a rallying cry for a new generation of culturally creative Christians. Discover your calling and join the culture makers. |

Milton’s Languages $49.98 Milton’s poetry is one of the glories of the English language, and yet it owes everything to Milton’s widespread knowledge of other languages: he knew ten and wrote in four. In Milton’s Languages, John K. Hale examines Milton’s language-related arts, giving all relevant texts in the original and in translation, and then traces the impact of Milton’s multilingualism on his major English poems. Hale argues convincingly that only by understanding Milton’s choice among languages can we grasp where Milton’s own unique–and highly influential–form of English originated. |

Languages in Contact $36.48 Accounting for the structural differences between "non-creole" language varieties (such as African-American English, Afrikaans and Brazilian Vernacular Portuguese) and the European source languages out of which they grew, John Holm argues that these differences resulted from "partial restructuring". Whereas some of the source languages’ morphological and syntactic features were retained, a significant number of features from the non-native speakers’ languages were also introduced. Holm identifies the linguistic processes leading to partial restructuring, bringing into focus an aspect of contact-induced language change which has previously not been analyzed. |

Dictionary of Languages $8.98 Approximately how many languages compose the Bantu language group of central and southern Africa? What is the name of the language spoken in Hawaii by an estimated two thousand people? What Western European language is not known to be related to any other language family in the world — and is considered by linguists to be one of the most difficult to learn? These are only a few of the questions language lovers, linguists, and lay readers will be able to answer with the Dictionary of Languages — an easy-to-navigate, authoritative guide to the world’s languages and language groups at the end of the twentieth century. Andrew Dalby had the needs and interests of general readers in mind when he compiled this comprehensive reference work — most other language guides are written for scholars, and many include little or none of the absorbing social, cultural, geographic, and historical details that are brought together here.In the Dictionary of Languages, readers will find:?a selection of four hundred languages and language groups, arranged alphabetically, with rich, detailed descriptions of the genesis, development, and current status of each;?more than two hundred maps displaying where the languages are spoken today;?sidebars showing alphabets, numerals, and other enriching facts?a comprehensive index listing additional languages, guiding readers to the nearest language groups with full writeups and maps;?charts breaking down large language groups — such as Bantu or Austroasiatic languages — by geographic region and approximate number of speakers. In a world where geopolitical boundaries often explain little about the people that live within them, where we may read about Kurd and Khmer in the same newspaper and be expected to be conversant about each — if not conversant in each — Dalby’s single, information-packed volume helps us make sense of the rich mosaic of world languages. |

Encyclopedia of the World’s Endangered Languages (Curzon Language Family Series) $392.98 The concern for the fast-disappearing language stocks of the world has arisen particularly in the past decade, as a result of the impact of globalization. This book appears as an answer to a felt need: to catalogue and describe those languages, making up the vast majority of the world’s six thousand or more distinct tongues, which are in danger of disappearing within the next few decades. Endangerment is a complex issue, and the reasons why so many of the world’s smaller, less empowered languages are not being passed on to future generations today are discussed in the book’s introduction. The introduction is followed by regional sections, each authored by a notable specialist, combining to provide a comprehensive listing of every language which is likely to disappear within the next few decades. Each regional section comprises an introduction that deals with problems of language preservation peculiar to the area, surveys of known extinct languages, and problems of classification. The introduction is followed by a list of all known languages within the region, endangered or not, arranged by genetic affiliation, with endangered and extinct languages marked. This listing is followed by entries covering each language listed as endangered. Useful maps are provided to pinpoint the more complex clusters of smaller languages. The Encyclopedia therefore provides in a single resource: expert analysis of the current language policy situation in every multilingual country and on every continent, detailed descriptions of little-known languages from all over the world, and clear alphabetical entries, region by region, of all the world’s languages currently thought to be in danger of extinction. The Encyclopedia of the Worldâ??s Endangered Languages will be a necessary addition to all academic linguistics collections and will be a useful resource for a range of readers with an interest in development studies, cultural heritage and international affairs. |

Languages and Their Speakers $29.48 Languages and Their Speakers provides an introduction both to languages themselves and to their social functions. Written especially for nonlinguistic majors, the book gives insight into the meaning, value, and function of language within a culture and into the ways language behavior varies and changes. Each chapter of the book discusses what it means to be a speaker of a particular language, and puts the language in context among the languages of the world. The book explores how people know their languages–know them as grammatical systems and know them as part of a cultural fabric. The authors discuss the ways speakers, as opposed to linguists, view a language. They consider what one must know in order to be a good speaker of a particular language; the constraints placed on communication by the culture in which it takes place; how social relationships influence language; and how the use of language can, in turn, influence social relationships.Languages and Their Speakers will be of interest to students of linguistics, anthropology, and those concerned about the use of language in its cultural context. This volume is complemented by a second volume entitled Languages and Their Status, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press. |

Making Enemies $57.48 When the statue of Saddam Hussein fell and Iraqis danced on the body, hitting it with their shoes, there was joy. Moments later, when an American soldier climbed the statue to place an American flag on the face, there was a national gasp, a moment of humiliation for the Iraqis. Americans had claimed to be liberating them, but the placing of the American flag was a sign of conquest. The flag was quickly removed and replaced with an Iraqi flag, but those tense moments were a brief example of the power and potentially far-reaching, volatile effects of humiliating acts, even when unintentional. In this fascianting book, Dr. Linder examines and explains, across history and nations, how this little-understood, often-overlooked emotion sparks outrage, uprisings, conflict and war. With the insights of a seasoned psychologist and peace scholar, the analytical skill of a linguist who speaks seven languages, and the scholarship of a Columbia University professor, Lindner explains which words and actions can humiliate, how the victim perceives those words and actions, what the consequences have been, and how individuals and organizations can work to avoid instances in the future. From acts of humiliation in Nazi Germany to intentional humiliations such as those at Abu Graib, from events during the bloodbaths in Rwanda and Somalia, to precursors to the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, Lindner offers vivid examples to explain how humiliation can be at the core of international conflict. |

African Languages $157.98 When compared to the European standard of one nation, one language, Africa’s 2,000 indigenous languages–not to mention its languages of colonial provenance, Arabic and numerous locally developed pidgins and creoles–would seem to pose insuperable problems of economic and political organization. The contributors to this volume, both African and European, examine the political consequences of multilingual societies which choose to develop certain languages over others. Working from the perspectives of anthropology and language planning, the contributors argue that the terms of the language development debate are biased because they borrow from inappropriate European models of nationhood. In their exploration of such issues as government language planning and the effects of planning on communities, the contributors offer an insightful, interdisciplinary examination of the African language experience. |

Languages of the Mind $22.48 Over the past two decades, Ray Jackendoff has persistently tackled difficult issues in the theory of mind and related theories of cognitive processing. Chief among his contributions is a formal theory that elaborates the nature of language and its relationship to a broad set of other domains. Languages of the Mind provides convenient access to Jackendoff’s work over the past five years on the nature of mental representations in a variety of cognitive domains, in the context of a detailed theory of the level of conceptual structure developed in his earlier books, Semantics and Cognition and Consciousness and the Computational Mind. The first two chapters summarize the theory of levels of mental representation ("languages of the mind") and their relationships to each other and show how conceptual structure can be approached along lines familiar from syntactic and phonological theory. From this background, subsequent chapters develop issues in word learning (and its pertinence to the Piaget-Chomsky debate) and the relation of conceptual structure to the understanding of physical space. Languages in Britain and Ireland $61.98 This book builds on the success of Glanville Price’s The Languages of Britain, published in 1984, which was widely acclaimed as the most lively, reliable and comprehensive survey of the great number of languages that have at one time or another taken root in Britain. This new book draws on contributions from a range of scholars to provide authoritative surveys of all the well-established languages currently spoken in Britain and Ireland, namely the Celtic languages, English, Scots, and the Norman French dialects of the Channel Islands, as well as of Cornish, Manx and Norn (the Norse language of the Northern Isles), which died out relatively recently. Chapters on Romani and the recently arrived community (or immigrant) languages are also included. The importance of Latin and Anglo-Norman as spoken languages in Britain at different periods in the past is recognized and there are chapters on such little known languages as Cumbric, Pictish and the Flemish of south-west Wales. The focus is on historical and sociolinguistic aspects of the languages covered, including their use as literary languages, and their present situation. |

A Concise Introduction to Languages and Machines (Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science) $29.48 This easy-to-follow text provides an accessible introduction to the key topics of formal languages and abstract machines within Computer Science. The author follows the successful formula of his first book on this subject, this time making these core computing topics more fundamental and providing an excellent foundation for undergraduates. The book is divided into two parts, Languages and Machines and Machines and Computation. The first part is concerned with formal language theory, as it applies to Computer Science, whereas Part 2 considers the computational properties of the machines in more detail. This text is deliberately non-mathematical and, wherever possible, links theory to practical considerations, in particular the implications for programming, computation and problem solving. Written in an informal style, this textbook assumes only a basic knowledge of programming on the part of the reader. Features: â?¢ Clear explanations of formal notation and jargon â?¢ Extensive use of examples to illustrate algorithms and proofs â?¢ Pictorial representations of key concepts â?¢ Chapter-opening overviews providing an introduction and guidance to each topic â?¢ An introductory chapter supplies the reader with a solid overview â?¢ End-of-chapter exercises and solutions This reader-friendly textbook has been written with undergraduates in mind and will be suitable for use on courses covering formal languages, computability, automata theory and computational linguistics. It will also make an excellent supplementary text for courses on algorithm complexity and compilers. |

Duelling Languages $109.48 The goal of this book is to describe and explain intrasentential codeswitching – the production of two or more languages within the same sentence. Most linquists who do not study codeswitching think of it as belonging strictly in the domain of sociolinguistics. Most codeswitching studies do indeed have a social aspect, because they typically use naturally occurring performance data as their base. However, this book is just as much a study in grammatical theory as a study of language in use. The specific research question addressed is this: when speakers alternate between two or more linguistic varieties, how free is this alternation from the structural point of view? Carol Myers-Scotton develops a model of the morphosyntactic constraints on codeswitching; she concludes that the principles governing codeswitching are the same everywhere. Her model supports a lexically based model of language production. |

Dreaming in Romance Languages $15.98 It’s hard to imagine anyone with even the slightest tolerance for rootsy singer/songwriter rock & roll not falling immediately under the spell of Catie Curtis, a Boston-based artist whose albums and live performances have been building her a substantial regional and national following over the past 15 years. Her fifth album is, thankfully, nothing substantially new: just a solid program of sturdy, sometimes anthemic, and occasionally darkly cathartic songs that chug along with the help of acoustic and electric guitars, the occasional Hammond organ or accordion, tasteful drums, and even a rhythm loop or two. Curtis is starting to rely a bit too much on one particular yodelly vocal trick, but other than that, her voice and delivery are perfectly suited to the material: on songs like “Hold On,” “Saint Lucy,” and a deeply affecting cover of the late Mark Sandman’s “Night,” she hits all the notes just right while making it sound as if she’s not really trying to hit the notes at all. “Cross Over to Me,” which Curtis wrote in collaboration with Beth Nielsen Chapman, is an artful expression of romantic yearning, and “Doctor” is an artless expression of dissatisfaction with a cruel world. All in all, this is a solid and satisfying effort from one of the folk-rock scene’s more impressive singer/songwriters. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music GuidePerformers: Kris Delmhorst – Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Mark Erelli – Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Jimmy Ryan – Mandolin; Trina Shoemaker – Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Deb Talan – Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Stephanie Winters – Cello; Julie Wolf – Accordion, Fender Rhodes, Keyboards, Organ (Hammond); Kevin Barry – Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Jeff Berlin – Drums, Percussion; Russell Chudnofsky – Guitar (Electric); Billy Conway – Drums; |

Making a Performance $29.95 Making a Performance traces innovations in devised performance from early theatrical experiments in the twentieth-century to the radical performances of the twenty-first century. This introduction to the theory, history and practice of devised performance explores how performance-makers have built on the experimental aesthetic traditions of the past. It looks to companies as diverse as Australia's Legs on the Wall, Britain's Forced Entertainment and the USA-based Goat Island to show how contemporary practitioners challenge orthodoxies to develop new theatrical languages. Designed to be accessible to both scholars and practitioners, this study offers clear, practical examples of concepts and ideas that have shaped some of the most vibrant and experimental practices in contemporary performance. |

In The Making $20.48 From the first page to the last, from Thomas Kinkaid (really!) to Matthew Barney, this book serves as a launching pad. Conclusions are perpetually delayed. Resolutions are continually postponed. The text is written for takeoff, not arrival. It is a first step for readersi explorations of current modes of art making and for their own future artistic achievements. The much-anticipated follow-up to Art on the Edge. . .and Over, Linda Weintraubis highly accessible introduction to contemporary art since the 1970s, In the Making: Creative Options for Contemporary Art explores essential but sometimes elusive facets of art making today. In her trademark writing style–straightforward and jargon-free–Weintraub sets out to itemize the conceptual and practical concerns that go into making contemporary art in all its endless permutations. In six clearly defined thematic sections–iScoping an Audience,i iSourcing Inspiration,i iCrafting an Artistic ‘Self,’i iExpressing an Artistic Attitude,i iChoosing a Mission,i and iMeasuring Successi–Weintraub moves artist by artist, in 40 individual chapters, using each to explain a different aspect of art making. Isaac Julien makes work for a highly specific audience; Michal Rovner communicates through metaphor and symbol; Charles Ray disrupts the viewer’s assumptions; Pipilotti Rist is inspired by female emotions; William Kentridge is moved by apartheid and redemption; Vanessa Beecroft epitomizes the biography of a smart, attractive, Caucasian woman; and Matthew Barney achieves success through resistance. Through a compelling combination of renowned and up-and-coming artists, Weintraub creates a complex understanding of how to make and look at contemporary art–but in a simple, easily digestible format and language. In addition to being a fine read for anyone who simply wants to understand how to look at contemporary art, In the Making is also an exceptional pedagogical tool, one that addresses what is fast becoming a huge gap in art education. Teaching artistic techniques no longer provides young artists with a sufficient education–a full range of conceptual issues needs to be considered in any well-rounded studio practice. Yet these very same conceptual issues are often those that are dealt with textually in art history and criticism classes. Weintraub persuasively offers a series of texts that fit squarely into this gap, addressing issues that concern anyone who is learning how to make art or how to understand it. In addition, In the Making includes a series of interviews in which many of the artists discuss the practical issues of their life’s work. Conducted by Weintraub’s students at Oberlin College, the interviews pose questions about the artists’ schooling, their studio space, and how they support themselves if their main income doesn’t come from their art–the kind of questions every art student has always wanted to ask the artists whose work they see on gallery walls. |
