new language learning

How to listen when you learn a new language?
I am Chinese and I am acquiring Mandarin. I'm a CBC (Chinese born in Canada) so I know almost no Chinese except a few phrases like telling my mother that I want for dinner, etc. One of the main problems I have when learning a language is understanding someone else's speech. It seems to me to be great remember the different characters. I studied a little more than the rest of my class. But the problem is, I'm behind most of my classmates when it comes to understanding the teacher. The same thing happened when I was learning French, which made me fall. How can I improve my ability to listen to foreign languages? It's a real pain. I tried to watch spongebob in Chinese with subtitles, but it does not help too much because I've only been learning for 9 months (1 class each week, so it's like cuz Classes 30 holiday) and do not know most words. Your suggestions are appreciated.
When you watch programs in Chinese, do not use subtitles. If you can read the English mind you did not need to pay attention to the Chinese. In fact, what you can do is watch a DVD once in English so you know this happens, then watch it again in Chinese and try to understand as much as you can. You can hear the same things in Chinese and even if you want. But do not use subtitles. You have the good sense to do more listening in Chinese. You do not understand all the words, so long as you understand even a little as you learn. I understand that your mother speaks Chinese, right? Thus, you can ask your parents to talk in Chinese, too, if they are ready and it does not seem too weird for you. Again, they did not need to translate for you, they can just tell you something. As such, you could do something together at home like washing dishes, and your mom could tell you about the dishes in Chinese. It is not necessary to translate into both directions in English. Just try to understand as much as you can and not worry about what you do not understand. When I was learning Spanish I used to watch the news program in Spanish basically every day. When I started I felt happy, although I could understand what the main theme of the story were new. Now I can understand the issue quite well. Same when you hear a language you understand very well, you usually do not understand every word, so Avoid the stress of being able to understand everything at first. Just keep it up. I hope you have a great experience!

Language and Learning $71.98 Once again, this comprehensive, easy-to-read book explores the way in which children learn language, the way language is taught to children, and how these two roads to language sometimes diverge–always giving equal treatment to first and second language learning. Piper tracks language acquisition, from birth through the school years, presenting numerous cases studies of children’s experiences as a means of illustrating stages of language development and the sequence of skills attainment. In addition, she thoroughly covers bilingualism, paying particular attention to the differences between second language learning at home and in a school setting. For ESL and elementary school speech teachers. |

Language Learning $6.48 Research on language development has often been focused on child language learning, and is usually restricted to monolingual learners. To date, relatively little attention has been given to language development beyond early childhood. However, changing lifestyle patterns and life events increasingly suggest that developing a linguistic repertoire remains important throughout the years of middle childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Recent emphasis on multi-literacies and internet communication has reinforced the need for people not only to develop the languages they already know, but to learn new languages in order to maintain and develop ever broadening relationships. Language Learning provides an introduction to language development that differs from existing books in that it traces language and cognitive development (together with the associated debates) from babyhood, through the school years of middle childhood and adolescence, into adulthood and the world of work. Because the world trend is towards learning to speak, read, and write more than one language, this comprehensive book includes descriptions and discussions of learning more than one language sequentially and simultaneously. The authors draw extensively on multicultural and multilingual contexts where they have lived, worked, and researched. It is ideal as an introductory student text and each chapter contains ideas and suggestions for students to follow-up and being their own small-scale investigations into language development. |

Learning a New Language $17.48 “Nothing we can ever say about God, no words, will ever be adequate to describe the burning mystery which is the Divine, but opening up the vocabulary to include feminine names and pronouns will bring a dimension to our understanding of God that has been tragically neglected. The idea of SHE WHO IS brings to bear all the loving, care-giving, wisdom-supplying richness of the female created in God’s image. The reality of the feminine in God is an idea we must consider and wrestle with if justice for all is to be a reality in the world. We must learn a new language.” (from Learning a New Language) |

Learning to Learn in a Second Language $22.48 [This] is a readable resource book which elementary bilingual teachers will find both insightful and practical. – ESLEJChildren from language backgrounds other than English represent a quarter of all our school population. Learning to Learn in a Second Language has been written specifically for all teachers of children for whom English is a second language, although it will be equally helpful to teachers of English speaking children. The book is based on the assumption that the classroom program is a major resource for language development, and that a responsive program takes into account the fact that children are not only learning a new language, but that they are learning in that language as well. It exemplifies current theories of second language development through a wide range of strategies and practical suggestions for the classroom teacher. |

Adaptive Second Language Learning $111.98 In our globalized world, English is increasingly the language of learning and of business. More and more international students look to English-speaking countries for their university education to prepare themselves for this changed world. To get on a degree course, they need English. These language learners are different in their motivation from those learning English as a foreign language, and from those learning English in a bilingual setting. This book presents a study that focuses on learners of English for academic purposes in Australia. It suggests a motivational model informed by theorizing in language learning and education. The proposed model of adaptive language learning identifies the motivational characteristics of those who succeed in learning to speak English. It looks at self-efficacy, anxiety, motivation and learning strategies in relation to speaking. Issues emerged in the study relating to learners from Confucian Heritage Cultures (for example, Japan, China and Korea). This book will be of particular interest to researchers and scholars in the area of second language motivation. |

Situated Language and Learning $38.48 Why do poor and minority students under-perform in school? Do computer games help or hinder learning? What can new research in psychology teach educational policy-makers?In this major new book, James Gee tackles the ‘big ideas’ about language, literacy and learning, applying his findings to real problems facing educationalists today. He tackles controversial debates such as the New Literacy Studies, and the idea that the academic language required to study, for example, Mathematics and the Sciences, is exclusionary and places unfair demands on poor and minority students. Gee also explores learning outside the classroom, looking at computer and video games and comparing the way a child interacts with others and technology to learn and play, with school-based learning in science classrooms.Bringing together the latest research from a number of disciplines, Language, Literacy and Learning is a bold, ambitious book by a leading figure in the field. It is essential reading for anyone interested in education and language. |

Foreign and Second Language Learning $5.48 In Foreign and Second Language Learning, William Littlewood surveys recent research into how people acquire languages and considers its relevance for language teaching. He describes the most important studies and ideas about first language acquisition, and how these have influenced and developed into studies of second language acquisition. He considers the background of language theories which were current before the present interest in acquisition research, and looks at factors such as learners’ errors, whether learners are predisposed to acquire language in certain sequences, why some people are apparently more successful at learning languages than others, and how learners make use of their new language to communicate. The use of clear examples, the careful explanation and balanced commentary on the research enable the reader to evaluate the evidence and consider the relevance of work in this field to the day to day concerns of teaching and learning languages. |

Second Language Learning and Language Teaching $38.48 The fourth edition of this classic textbook has been revised to reflect recent developments in language teaching and learning yet retains the basic structure and approach so popular with its readers. Teaching and learning content has been updated, particularly taking into account the rise of task-based learning, Conversational Analysis and social models of second language acquisition, changes in national syllabuses and examinations and the increasing controversy over the role of the native speaker target. Each chapter has been revised to stand alone, enabling the text to be taught and studied out of sequence if preferred. A set of focussing questions has also been added to each and further reading sections have been updated. In addition, icons appear throughout the text signalling where extra information – summaries, data, lecture notes, test batteries and more – can be found on the author’s accompanying website. Second Language Learning and Language Teaching remains the essential textbook for all student teachers of modern languages and TESOL as well as applied linguistics. |

Learning to Read in a New Language $45.95 [This book] is a helpful edition to a field where there is a limited amount of good literature to support teachers dealing with second language acquisition in the classroom' – ESCalate. `Gregory's book is an important and timely contribution to the literature on literacy, biliteracy, second language learning and early childhood education, synthesizing cutting-edge research, perspectives and teaching approaches in a clear and accessible way. Overall, it is a terrific resource' – Dinah Volk. Across the world, an increasing number of young children are learning to read in languages different from their mother tongue, and there is a clear need for a book which addresses the ways in which these children should be taught. Eve Gregory's book is unique in doing so. Building upon the ideas proposed in Making Sense of a New World, this second edition widens its scope, arguing for the limitations of policies designed for 'monolingual minds' in favour of methodologies which put plurilingualism at the centre of literacy tuition. This book offers a practical reading programme — an 'Inside-Out' (starting from experience) and 'Outside-In' (starting from literature) approach to teaching which can be used with individuals, small groups and whole classes. It uses current sociocultural theory, while drawing on examples of children from America, Australia, Britain, China, France, Singapore, South Africa and Thailand who are engaged in learning to read nursery rhymes and songs, storybooks, letters, the Bible and the Qur'an as well as school texts, in languages they do not speak fluently. Gregory argues that, in order for literacy tuition to be successful, reading must make sense — children must feel part of a community of readers. There is no common method which they use to learn, but rather a shared aim to which they aspire: making sense of a new world through new words. Eve Gregory is Professor of Language and Culture in Education at Goldsm |

Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning $24.48 How does a mainstream elementary classroom teacher with little or no specialized ESL training meet the challenge of teaching linguistically diverse students? Pauline Gibbons suggests how: integrate the teaching of English with the content areas of the regular curriculum. What’s more, she shows how in this practical resource book.Gibbons begins with a strong theoretical underpinning for her practice, drawing on a functional model of language, sociocultural theories of learning, and current research on second-language development. After supporting her view that the regular curriculum offers the best language-learning environment for young ESL students, Gibbons demonstrates the ways in which content areas provide a context for the teaching of English, from speaking and listening to reading and writing. These in turn are treated not as discrete skills, but as ones that can also be integrated in the learning of diverse subjects. Gibbons illustrates this with a wide range of teaching and learning activities across the curriculum, supplemented with programming and assessment formats and checklists. Language learning is not a simple linear process, but involves the ongoing development of skills for a range of purposes. Gibbons sees this development as largely the result of the social contexts and interactions in which learning occurs. By focusing on the ways in which teachers can "scaffold" language and learning in the content areas, she takes a holistic approachone that appreciates the struggle of students learning a new language, while simultaneously developing subject knowledge in it, and the challenge for teachers to address these needs. Given today’s culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, ESL students can no longer be thought of as a group apart from the mainstreamthey are. the mainstream. This book describes the ways to ensure that ESL learners become full members of the school community with the language and content skills they need for success. |

Affect in Language Learning (Cambridge Language Teaching Library) $37.48 The affective domain and the emotional factors which influence language learning have been of interest in the field of language teaching for a number of years. Language, Learning, and Behavior Disorders $101.48 The role of language as a bridge between learning disability and psychiatric disorder is the unifying theme of this wide-ranging book. The editors of this text give particular emphasis to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and autistic disorder. Contributors seek explanations for the dual incidence of psychiatric and language disorder by considering research in developmental, cognitive and biological fields, and speculate on the contribution of new imaging modalities. Essays cover topical issues such as syndrome definition in dyslexia, acquired memory disorder in childhood, and biology-behavior correspondence, as well as a range of treatment options. Enlivened with case vignettes, and offering insights into the range of current thinking on language and behavior, this will prove to be a rich resource. |

This book thus mediates between linguistic and language learning theories and educational practice, modelling the very best of what applied linguistics has to offer.’ Diane Larsen-Freeman, Professor of Education, University of Michigan. The reality of multicultural societies and globalization has increased the demand for language abilities that far exceed those that have typically been associated with communicative competence in a second language. This book examines the acquisition of advanced levels of ability in three parts: theoretical; descriptive; and instructional. It moves beyond the traditional constraints of second language acquisition research by linking systemic functional linguistics and sociocultural theory. The contributors draw primarily on the work of Halliday, Vygotsky and Bakhtin, as well as empirical data from the language classroom, to suggest practical applications towards advanced literacy and linguistic competence. Advanced Language Learning will be of interest to academics researching systemic functional linguistics, second language acquisition and applied linguistics. |

The research uses methods from conversation analysis with longitudinal data to document practices for interaction between learners and how those practices change over time. Language learning is seen in learners? change in participation in their in social actions that occur around and within teacher-assigned language learning tasks (starting the task, non-elicited story tellings within tasks, and ending tasks). Web links are provided so the reader can see the data from the classroom that is the subject of the analyses. |

Language Development and Learning to Read $24.48 Research on reading has tried, and failed, to account for wide disparities in reading skill even among children taught by the same method. Why do some children learn to read easily and quickly while others, in the same classroom and taught by the same teacher, don’t learn to read at all? In Language Development and Learning to Read, Diane McGuinness examines scientific research that might explain these disparities. She focuses on reading predictors, analyzing the effect individual differences in specific perceptual, linguistic, and cognitive skills may have on a child’s ability to read. Because of the serious methodological problems she finds in the existing research on reading, many of the studies McGuinness cites come from other fields — developmental psychology, psycholinguistics, and the speech and hearing sciences — and provide a new perspective on which language functions matter most for reading and academic success. McGuinness first examines the phonological development theory — the theory that phonological awareness follows a developmental path from words to syllables to phonemes — which has dominated reading research for thirty years, and finds that research evidence from other disciplines does not support the theory. McGuinness then looks at longitudinal studies on the development of general language function, and finds a "tantalizing connection" between core language functions and reading success. Finally, she analyzes mainstream reading research, which links reading ability to specific language skills, and the often flawed methodology used in these studies. McGuinness’s analysis shows the urgent need for a shift in our thinking about how to achieve reading success. |

Form-Focused Instruction and Second Language Learning $45.48 How does classroom language learning take place? How does an understanding of second language acquisition contribute to language teaching? In answering these questions, Rod Ellis reviews a wide range of research on classroom learning, developing a theory of instructed second language acquisition that has significant implications for language teaching. The early chapters of this book trace the attempts to explain classroom language learning in terms of general theory of learning (behaviorism) and the study of naturalistic language learning. The middle chapters document the attempts of researchers to enter the "black box" of the classroom in order to describe the teaching-learning behaviors that take place there and to investigate to what extent and in what ways instruction results in acquisition. The book concludes with a theory of classroom language learning. This theory advances an explanation of the relationship between explicit and implicit linguistic knowledge and in so doing accounts for how both form-focused and meaning-focused instruction contribute to second language acquisition in the classroom. |

Learning the Language of Babylon $3.98 How can Christians make a difference in an ever-changing world? Is it possible to engage our culture without giving in to its powerful influence? While God calls His church to change the world by renewing hearts, many Christians are not comfortable venturing out into a world whose values are often hostile. In Learning the Language of Babylon, Pastor Terry Crist clearly explains how the spirit and ideas of Babylon pervade the world today’ from the White House to the schoolhouse. Crist provides evidence of cultural breakdown, but more importantly, he offers ways for us to reconnect with our community. Cultural relevance, he believes, must become the mission of the church. Drawing lessons from the life of the prophet Daniel, Crist describes seven mandates we need to adopt to become reformers in our culture. Understanding Second Language Learning Difficulties $133.98 "This volume has some really nice features such as: the discussion of audio-lingual theory as deriving from behaviorism, the terrific discussion of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation–that is discussed here in a manner superior to any I’ve seen, the discussion of over-motivated students; the relation between self-esteem and self-efficacy, disabilities and language learning, and the provision of specific tips for learning vocabulary, grammar etc. The case studies are also wonderful. " Robert Sternberg, Department of Psychology Yale University "The case studies are among the most appealing characteristics of the book. They present readily identifiable, relatively easy-to-understand types of learners, and they include a vast range of possible types. The questions and prods related to the case studies are very valuable. The tables are very handy. I love the table on defense mechanisms and the chart about the intriguing metaphors for language learning." Rebecca L. Oxford, Ph.D, Area Head, Teacher Education University of Alabama Why is it so difficult for adults to learn a second language? How can we get to the source of these difficulties, diagnose the learner, and help them achieve their goals? Understanding Second Language Learning Difficulties addresses these questions, demonstrating some of the insights, techniques, and skills needed to understand adult students who are having problems learning a second language. Author Madeline E. Ehrman provides a deep examination of the source of difficulty, taking into consideration such issues as learning styles, personality dispositions, motivation, learning strategies, self-efficacy, and anxiety. Helpful summaries, case studies, and exercises are included, giving the reader a firm grasp of the complex issues involved. This new volume presents multiple theories and models for each of the cases discussed, showing the reader how to evaluate observations in terms of individual difference dimensions. Scholars, researchers, and professionals in linguistics, communication, English as a second language, as well as teachers and trainers will value the thorough examination, and unique viewpoints this book offers. |

Learning the Language of Prayer $12.48 Many Christians want to have deep, fruitful prayer lives, but don’t know where to start. They have heard the message that prayer is important, that disciples of Jesus are people of prayer. What they often have not heard is what to say in prayer. The Catholic, Evangelical, and Charismatic perspectives on prayer, brought to bear on one another, have potential to enrich the prayer life of any Christian. Practical exercises and biblical examples answer the needs of those who wish to grow in their practice of prayer. Balancing practical concern with theological insight, this small book opens wide resources treasured by saints everywhere. About the Author: Paul C.
