Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis $23.48 "For those interested in finding a computer application well-suited for their own qualitative research or just learning more about the capabilities of the latest generation of computer software designed with text, Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis by Eben A. Weitzman and Matthew B. Miles probably represents the single investment they can make. . . . In Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis, Weitzman and Miles . . . provide a critical, in-depth look at 24 separate applications. The authors make an impressive team: Weitzman is a professor of social and organizational psychology with an extensive computer background, and Miles is a social psychologist who is well-known in the field of qualitative research for co-authoring a popular book on qualitative data analysis with A. Michael Huberman. Together, the two researchers have produced an informative, user-friendly sourcebook that can save readers a significant amount of time and money when shopping for a software program for qualitative data analysis. "Weitzman and Miles clearly put a tremendous amount of work into Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis; they write their reviews of each application in remarkably lucid and jargon-free language in a format reminiscent of Consumer Reports. The level of detail in the reviews reflects their careful and thoughtful field-testing of 24 software programs. Reviews average about 10 pages each and actually show you what each application can do, and every review includes a series of realistic visuals (complete with helpful captions) that display what the computer screen looks like when performing various functions with that specific computer program. In addition to describing the special features of each computer program, Weitzman and Miles discuss the strengths and weaknesses of every application and make explicit comparisons with other applications in the same ‘family.’ "Sage Publications deserves special credit for their role in publishing Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis. Instead of issuing this book in hardcover and attaching a hefty price tag, they released it as an oversized (81/2-by-11-inch) paperback and made this valuable information available at a modest cost. Computer Programs for Qualitative Data Analysis is the most comprehensive resource on its subject currently available, and is an excellent starting point for qualitative researchers interested in integrating computer technology more fully into their own data analysis strategies." –Harvard Educational Review "The book by Weitzman & Miles is one of many new books on computers and qualitative software and indeed a good one. . . . The book is truly a user’s book–one of the useful ones. . . . After this first feeling of self-confidence, I just kept on reading the book and found very thorough and illuminative reviews of no less that 24 computer programs for qualitative analysis. . . . Renata Tesch initiated the work of m… |

Writing Fast Programs $34.98 Writing Fast Programs" provides the basic elements of code optimization and provides strategies for reducing bottlenecks in practical simulation and numerical modeling code. The target audience is scientists and engineers and students in these fields. One pre-publication reviewer called this a much-needed intermediate text to bridge the gap between existing introductory and more advance programming books aimed at scientists. "Writing Fast Programs" does not teach basic programming; some programming proficiency is assumed, along with familiarity with the basic programming terminology. Code examples are presented in C, but BASIC (as a convenient pseudo-language) examples are provided for those not familiar with C. In general, the strategies presented are not language specific and should therefore benefit a wide programming audience. For example, similar techniques have been discussed for Java. |

Discourse and Context in Language Teaching $31.48 Discourse and Context in Language Teaching: A Guide for Language Teachers is part of the Cambridge Handbooks for Language for Language Teachers series. The paperback edition recommends that language teachers incorporate an awareness of discourse and pragmatics in their teaching if they truly wish to implement a communicative approach in their classrooms. After two introductory chapters on discourse and pragmatics, the authors show how a discourse perspective can enhance the teaching of traditional areas of linguistic knowledge (pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary) and the teaching of language processing skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). This awareness of discourse is then carried over to curriculum development, assessment, and classroom research. With discussion questions and activities at the end of each chapter, this book can be used in methods courses or in-service training programs. |

Language Program Evaluation $19.98 Although much has been written about the testing and evaluation of language students, few books have dealt with the much broader issue of measuring the success of language programs. Filling a critical gap in the literature of applied linguistics, Language Program Evaluation provides teachers, researchers, and administrators with a complete introduction to both qualitative and quantitative approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of their programs. Through a careful blend of theory, research, and practice, the author presents a testing model that is specifically tailored to the concerns of language education programs and which can be adapted to different contexts and updated as teaching and learning situations evolve. He proposes a shift from purely quantitative studies which consider only end-of-program achievement gains to ones that include an investigation of program process using qualitative, naturalistic methods. |

Language of Fertility, The $3.48 The first mind-body program that helps women and couples to discover and work through emotional and psychological barriers to conception, The Language of Fertility teaches methods of conscious fertility that can work with or without the assistance of your physician. Niravi B. Payne is an internationally recognized pioneer in mind-body fertility therapy who has counseled hundreds of clients from all over the United States and abroad. Her clinical experience has shown that reproductive problems, including miscarriages, difficulty in conceiving, and low sperm count, are directly linked to attitudes, beliefs, and family dynamics that reach back into your childhood and affect your emotional life, your reproductive system, and your fertility today. Payne has adapted her sought-after Whole Person Fertility Programsm, which she teaches to other therapists and uses with great success with her clients, to make it available and accessible to readers for the first time in this book. The Language of Fertility challenges the traditionally held view that problems with fertility are due to purely a medical condition to be treated with drugs and surgery. Niravi Payne explains how women’s and men’s bodies and minds can be so affected by generations of their family’s beliefs and patterns of behavior that their natural fertility and ability to conceive can be blocked. Her unique techniques of self-analysis help women, men, and couples become conscious about how they need to change their minds and their lives to reclaim their natural fertility and conceive and give birth to a baby. Her methods are helpful at any time–whether used while undergoing medical reproductive treatments, between treatments, or independent of any medical treatment. In the Whole Person Fertility Programs, Payne leads readers through the same exercises, family tree mappings, meditations, visualizations, and journal-writing that have helped her clients break through the emotional barriers to conception and have led them to heal their whole lives–whether or not pregnancy occurs. And she tells dozens of inspiring and compelling case studies from her own practice, in which her clients have healed their relationships to their spouses, siblings, and other family members, and as a direct result have been able to conceive. The Language of Fertility also establishes a new way of thinking and talking about fertility that forever banishes the "too oldisms" that many women in their thirties and forties often hear, including outdated and inaccurate terms such as "unexplained infertility" and "old eggs." Niravi Payne debunks ageist myths through an eye-opening exploration of the historical and sociological factors that profoundly affected the reproductive lives of the millions of female baby boomers who were able to delay childbearing. In addition, she allays the growing concerns of women in their twenties and early thirties who are waiting to have children until later in li… |

Psychology of the Language Learner $46.98 Research results over the past decades have consistently demonstrated that a key reason why many second language learners fail–while some learners do better with less effort–lies in various learner attributes such as personality traits, motivation, or language aptitude. In psychology, these attributes have traditionally been called "individual differences." The scope of individual learner differences is broad–ranging from creativity to learner styles and anxiety–yet there is no current, comprehensive, and unified volume that provides an overview of the considerable amount of research conducted on various language learner differences, until now. Each chapter in this new volume focuses on a different individual difference variable. Besides a review of the relevant second language literature, Zoltán Dörnyei presents a concise overview of the psychological research involving each topic. A key concern for the author has been to define the various learner factors as measurable constructs and therefore the discussion includes a summary of the most famous tests and questionnaires in each domain.A wide range of readers will benefit from this book–students in linguistics, applied linguistics, modern languages, and psychology programs; second language teachers participating in in-service training courses; and researchers in second language acquisition and psychology. |

Meeting the Needs of Second Language Learners $16.48 Today’s public schools are increasingly characterized by cultural and linguistic diversity. Studies show that about 4.4 million students nationwide lack the English skills needed to succeed academically. To help second language learners keep up in the classroom, educators must understand the challenges that bilingual students and schools face. In this concise guide, former bilingual teacher Judith Lessow-Hurley dives right into the language debate swirling in school systems large and small. She examines the popular myths about educating students in a multilinquistic society and introduces the key issues: * The demographics of second language learners * The theory underlying language instruction * Desirable qualifications for bilingual teachers * Effective teaching methods and programs * Language and politics * Language and the law By confronting common beliefs about English-only and immersion programs, basic interpersonal communication skills, the influence of culture on language, and more, Lessow-Hurley reveals how schools can successfully educate students from diverse backgrounds–without unintended prejudice. Her passionate and intelligent response in the language debate views every school as the bridge between cultures, helping all students develop academically and equally. |

Your Child’s Secret Language $13.98 If one of your kids gets up from the kitchen table and says "BRB," don’t despair. He or she will "be right back." And, if you tell a joke and the response is "LOL," that’s a good sign. It means, "laughing out loud." In case you haven’t noticed, your kids are speaking a new language. It probably won’t count as a language requirement when they apply for college, but it does help them communicate with other kids via chat rooms and instant message programs. It’s pretty common for kids to check each other out when they’re online, which could result in the prompt "A/S/L/" for age, sex and location. If your kids get such a query, please remind them not be specific with the "L" part of the answer. You don’t want them disclosing details that could give away their exact whereabouts. Many of the terms used by kids today focus in on sexual activity or drug use. These are words that parents need to be especially aware of so they can be on the alert for a threat or actual danger to their children. Within these pages you will find several words and meanings of words. Hopefully, they will be of great value as you learn your child’s secret language. |
