speak a new language fast

learn a new language … ive summary em … four options?
Hungarian, Romanian, Swedish or Polish? * (Maybe even Russian) English is my native language. I Just do not want to go if the school system to learn a language, because all they offer is Spanish, French and Latin. im not interested in any of these beacause Spanish, i cannot roll my R or anything fast and fantasy. I like a very fat English language. i cannot say words very strongly. French is only spoken in France itself. Canada could not useful. because I live in Vermont. (I still do not want to learn it tho lol) and Latin is essentially required by our school. If you could indicate the pros and con reasons why … and also, what looks like the alphebet like? I love the letters of the Russian language, but I can not get the right accent for virtually any of sylobols theyre.
Go to Swedish. Swedish is spoken only by a large number of people per compared to other languages, but it is very interesting because it is very close to Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Faroese, and if you look to learn many new languages, if you master a Scandinavian language, others are fairly easy thereafter. On another note, there are many similarities with English, and be native English speaker, you will learn much faster because of all the English you already know which comes North Germanic branch of the tree of language. (Think, who settled in England?) To continue, the game sound and the alphabet are very easy for a native English speaker. It is very similar to English, but added that many sounds and fricative as, for example, the Netherlands. In addition, the alphabet is based on the same Latin alphabet, with some additional letters, which are more than letters, such as accents, and easy to pick on. Another good reason grammar is simple. The grammar is almost exactly like English, with some exceptions. Here is an example of Sweden for you to try: Hello: Hej (like "Hi" in English) Yes: Ja (Yaa) n: Nej (NaI) I'm not saying you should not try another language, a language totally unknown can be the most rewarding times in my opinion, but it is better to have a good experience with your first foreign language, then I would say something that you are very interested, or something quite simple. In addition, finding native speakers is essential. For most, including I, I measure my ability in a foreign language by the way I can talk and function using the language.

Speak $20.98 This book is a history of human speech from prehistory to the present. It charts the rise of some languages and the fall of others, explaining why some survive and others die. It shows how languages change their sounds and meanings, and how the history of languages is closely linked to the history of peoples. Writing in a lively, readable style, distinguished Swedish scholar Tore Janson makes no assumptions about previous knowledge. He takes the reader on a voyage of exploration through the changing patterns of the world’s languages, from ancient China to ancient Egypt, imperial Rome to imperial Britain, Sappho’s Lesbos to contemporary Africa. He discovers the links between the histories of societies and their languages; he shows how language evolved from primitive calls; he considers the question of whether one language can be more advanced than another. The author describes the history of writing and the impact of changing technology. He ends by assessing the prospects for English world domination and predicting the languages of the distant future. Five historical maps illustrate this fascinating history of our defining characteristic and most valuable asset. |

Ceo-Speak $70.48 In a post-Enron world in which corporate accountability and ethical behaviour have become increasingly important, Joel Amernic and Russell Craig consider the implications of the corporate language of leadership. Through a rhetorical analysis of the speeches and letters of chief executive officers, annual reports to shareholders, press releases, and company newsletters and websites, Amernic and Craig show that CEOs are elitist and exclusionary propagators of an often biased stream of discourse. CEO-Speak explores the metaphors and persuasive strategies used by corporate leaders at Enron, Microsoft, AOL-TimeWarner, General Electric, IBM, Nortel, Canadian National Railways, Andersen, Disney, and Alcan-Pechiney-Alusuisse. Amernic and Craig find that CEO-speak evokes an ideology of neo-liberalism, extreme individualism, hyper-competition, and global capitalism. They examine the internet as a powerful new platform for CEO-speak and show that CEOs are frequently presented as heroes engaged in "the war of business" who can effect astonishing miracles of financial performance and re-invention. In contesting the notion that accounting is objective, CEO-Speak serves as an introduction to the fundamental controversies and ambiguities in corporate accountability and provides rich examples of the excesses of corporate communication. The authors argue that the language of CEOs raises alarm bells regarding the ethos of corporate leadership and urge the business press, academia, and the accounting and auditing community to take a more critical approach. |

Sista, Speak! $8.48 "This book is a major achievement by one of the brightest young scholars in the field." —Geneva Smitherman, author of Talkin That Talk: Language, Culture, and Education in African America The demand of white, affluent society that all Americans should speak, read, and write "proper" English causes many people who are not white and/or middle class to attempt to "talk in a way that feel peculiar to [their] mind," as a character in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple puts it. In this book, Sonja Lanehart explores how this valorization of "proper" English has affected the language, literacy, educational achievements, and self-image of five African American women—her grandmother, mother, aunt, sister, and herself. Through interviews and written statements by each woman, Lanehart draws out the life stories of these women and their attitudes toward and use of language. Making comparisons and contrasts among them, she shows how, even within a single family, differences in age, educational opportunities, and social circumstances can lead to widely different abilities and comfort in using language to navigate daily life. Her research also adds a new dimension to our understanding of African American English, which has been little studied in relation to women. |

Tracks That Speak $6.48 What do the words saguaro, parka, hickory, and muskrat have in common? They all come from Native American languages. Few people consider how deeply American English is indebted to Native Americans and how widely the contributions of Native Americans are used in English today. In Tracks That Speak, Charles L. Cutler offers seventy fascinating studies, each focusing on a particular word borrowed from a Native American language. He tells us about the words themselves and about the things they stoodâand standâfor, illuminating not only the roles these things played in traditional Indian societies but also the ones they continue to play in America today. For example, Cutler explains where the word moccasin comes from, how moccasins were made and decorated, what advantages they had for their wearers, how and when they were adopted by European settlers, and what incarnations of them can be found in modern clothing catalogs. Such a wealth of historical, ethnographic, and linguistic material on Native American loanwords in English has never before been gathered and presented so clearly, making Tracks That Speak as engaging as it is informative. |

Why Business People Speak Like Idiots $9.98 "Ole! If you think you smell something at work, there’s probably good reason–"bull" has become the official language of business. Every day, we get bombarded by an endless stream of filtered, antiseptic, jargon-filled corporate speak, all of which makes it harder to get heard, harder to be authentic, and definitely harder to have fun. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The team that brought you the Clio Award-winning Bullfighter software is back with an entertaining, bare-knuckled guide to talking straight–for those who want to climb the corporate ladder, but refuse to check their personality at the door. Why Business People Speak Like Idiots exposes four traps that transform us from funny, honest and engaging weekend people into boring business stiffs: The Obscurity Trap: "After extensive analysis of the economic factors facing our industry, we have concluded that a restructuring is essential to maintaining competitive position. A task force has been assembled…" These are the empty calories of business communication. And, unfortunately, they’re the rule. The Obscurity Trap catches idiots desperate to sound smart or prove their purpose, and lures them with message-killers like jargon, long-windedness, acronyms, and evasiveness. The Anonymity Trap: Businesses love clones–easy to hire, easy to manage, easy to train, easy to replace–and almost everyone is all too happy to oblige. We outsource our voice through templates, speechwriters and email, and cave in to conventions that aren’t really even rules. The Hard-Sell Trap: Legions of business people fall prey to the Hard-Sell Trap. We overpromise. We accentuate the positive and pretend the negative doesn’t exist. This may work for those pushing Ginsu knives and miracle Abdominizers, but it’s dead wrong for persuading business people to listen. The Tedium Trap: Everyone you work with thinks about sex, tells stories, gets caught up in life’s amazing details, and judges everyone else by the way they look and act. We live to be entertained. We all learned that in Psychology 101, except for the business idiots who must have skipped that semester. They tattoo their long executive-sounding titles on their foreheads, dump pre-packaged numbers on their audience, and virtually guarantee that we want nothing to do with them. This is your wake-up call. Personality, humanity and candor are being sucked out of the workplace. Let the wonks send their empty messages. Yours are going to connect. Fast Company magazine named Why Business People Speak Like Idiots one of the ideas and trends that will change how we work and live. So grab your cape and sharpen your sword. It’s time to fight the bull! " |

To Speak in Pairs $137.48 These original essays study ritual language and parallelism (the strict ordering of words and phrases in alternative, duplicate form). The introduction puts the topic in historical perspective and what was once viewed as a composition form unique to ancient Hebrew is now seen as a feature common to literatures around the world. Here is the first book to compare in detail living traditions of parallel composition. Yet, despite the diversity of languages discussed by the contributors, their materials are drawn from a single cultural area still unknown to most specialists: Eastern Indonesia. All the essays contain original texts with translations and with detailed commentary on both content and context. |

From "Abe" (five dollars’ worth of illegal drugs) to "zombie" (a police officer who works at night), CopSpeak is "phat" (cool). How to Speak Dog $3.98 At long last, dogs will know just how smart their owners can be. By unlocking the secrets of the hidden language of dogs, psychologist Stanley Coren allows us into the doggy dialogue and makes two-way communication a reality. For the first time, instead of receiving an incomprehensible mash of mixed human signals, man’s best friend will be treated to the proper use of dog language. Finally, effective communication can take place between canines and these "strange tall dogs" who have mystified them for so long. Building on research into the simplified language of "baby talk" (that nearly universally recognized "motherese" with which mothers speak to their infants), Coren provides insights into the structure and form of the simplified language that many dog owners use to communicate with their pets. A better understanding of this language, "Doggish," is the key to improved two-way communication. Coren provides not only the sounds, words, actions, and movements with which we can effectively communicate with our dogs, but deciphers the signs that our dogs give to us. By giving us the information we need to interpret the wagging of their tails, the flapping of their ears, the movement of their bodies, and the lapping of their tongues as much as their barks, Coren allows us into their rich world of communication, giving dog-lovers the skills they need to improve their relationships with their pets. Original drawings illustrate the subtleties of their body language, and a handy glossary is included for easy reference. As every owner will admit, dogs have an uncanny ability to respond to nuances of human speech. Although actual conversation of the sort Lassie seemed capable of in Hollywood mythmaking remains forever out of reach, research and observation show that a great deal of real communication is possible beyond the giving and obeying of commands. How to Speak Dog explores the limits of dogs’ language abilities and charts the possibilities. It gives owners the key to interpret correctly not only information but emotional states. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with each other, Coren provides a surprising and fascinating window into the world of dog communication, why they speak and what they talk about. Drawing on substantial research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average house dog can differentiate between 60 and 140 words, though some research suggests that dogs can hear many more and also pick words out of sentences and respond to them. How to Speak Dog examines people’s beliefs about the ability of their dogs to communicate and contrasts those with the scientific reality. As Stanley Coren shows us, the gulf is more narrow than many people think — and the rewards of bridging it are endless. |

When Buildings Speak $59.98 In When Buildings Speak, Anthony Alofsin explores the rich yet often overlooked architecture of the late Austro-Hungarian Empire and its successor states. He shows that several different styles emerged in this milieu during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Moreover, he contends that each of these styles communicates to us in a manner resembling language and its particular means of expression. Covering a wide range of buildings—from national theaters to crematoria, apartment buildings to warehouses, and sanatoria to postal savings banks—Alofsin proposes a new way of interpreting this language. He calls on viewers to read buildings in two ways: through their formal elements and through their political, social, and cultural contexts. By looking through Alofsin’s eyes, readers can see how myriad nations sought to express their autonomy by tapping into the limitless possibilities of art and architectural styles. And such architecture can still speak very powerfully to us today about the contradictory issues affecting parts of the former Habsburg Empire. “The book itself as a production is spectacular.”—David Dunster, Architectural Review (01/12/2007) |

Do You Speak American? $8.98 Is the growing influence of Spanish threatening to displace English in the United States? Are America’s grammatical standards in serious decline? Has the media saturation of our culture homogenized our speech? These and other questions catapulted Robert MacNeil and William Cran, coauthors of the language classic The Story of English, on a journey that took them around the country in search of answers. Do You Speak American?, the companion volume to a PBS special, is the tale of the surprising discoveries they made while interviewing a host of native speakers and observing everyday verbal interactions across the country. Examining the histories and controversies surrounding both written and spoken American English, MacNeil and Cran address highly emotional anxieties and assumptions about our language-and offer some unpredictable responses. With insight and wit, MacNeil and Cran bring us a compelling follow-up to The Story of English that is at once a celebration and a potent study of our singular language. |

More Hide and Speak $8.48 Learning words in French becomes a fun game for kids when they open this brand-new More Hide & Speak book. It’s a sequel to the original and very popular Hide & Speak: French published by Barron’s a few seasons ago. The format hasn’t changed, but all the words and subject themes are new. Kids open a book to any right-hand page, where they see two vertical lists. The list on the left is a series of nine simple color illustrations, and the right-hand list contains words to be learned in French. Each word names the object in the adjoining picture. After studying the words and pictures, kids hide the pictures with the book’s left-hand cover flap. They recite the words out loud as they try to recall the adjoining picture and name it in their own language. They can also use a water-based felt-tip pen to write their answers on the cover flap, which can be erased for future use by rubbing it with a soft cloth or tissue. The words on each page relate to a single theme, such as Rooms of the House, Sports, Spring and Summer, Autumn and Winter, Animals and Insects, and many others — 15 themes in total. |

How to Speak and Write Correctly $11.98 The classic text on how to speak and write English ‘correctly.’ *** "In the preparation of this little work the writer has kept one end in view, viz.: To make it serviceable for those for whom it is intended, that is, for those who have neither the time nor the opportunity, the learning nor the inclination, to peruse elaborate and abstruse treatises on Rhetoric, Grammar, and Composition. To them such works are as gold enclosed in chests of steel and locked beyond power of opening. This book has no pretension about it whatever,-it is neither a Manual of Rhetoric, expatiating on the dogmas of style, nor a Grammar full of arbitrary rules and exceptions. It is merely an effort to help ordinary, everyday people to express themselves in ordinary, everyday language, in a proper manner." |

Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? $28.98 We experience spaces not only by seeing but also by listening. We can navigate a room in the dark, and "hear" the emptiness of a house without furniture. Our experience of music in a concert hall depends on whether we sit in the front row or under the balcony. The unique acoustics of religious spaces acquire symbolic meaning. Social relationships are strongly influenced by the way that space changes sound. In Spaces Speak, Are You Listening?, Barry Blesser and Linda-Ruth Salter examine auditory spatial awareness: experiencing space by attentive listening. Every environment has an aural architecture. The audible attributes of physical space have always contributed to the fabric of human culture, as demonstrated by prehistoric multimedia cave paintings, classical Greek open-air theaters, Gothic cathedrals, acoustic geography of French villages, modern music reproduction, and virtual spaces in home theaters. Auditory spatial awareness is a prism that reveals a culture’s attitudes toward hearing and space. Some listeners can learn to "see" objects with their ears, but even without training, we can all hear spatial geometry such as an open door or low ceiling. Integrating contributions from a wide range of disciplinesâ??including architecture, music, acoustics, evolution, anthropology, cognitive psychology, audio engineering, and many othersâ??Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? establishes the concepts and language of aural architecture. These concepts provide an interdisciplinary guide for anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of how space enhances our well-being. Aural architecture is not the exclusive domain of specialists. Accidentally or intentionally, we all function as aural architects. |
