netbeans new language support

January 7th, 2010 admin No comments

PHP is a scripting most popular open-source. Open-source, free, so you can use PHP as often as you want without having to pay for licenses or support. It is a full-featured programming language capable of managing database very broad-based environments Online.

PHP works in conjunction with HTML. If you're already familiar with HTML, making the jump to PHP is simple, and the two languages are interchangeable on the page. PHP can add new features to your site, but the issue will be determined by HTML.

PHP is known for interactive features such as:
1. caddies
2. recommend items to your users,
3. interactive forums
4. Systems Private Messaging

The built in math functions in PHP can help you track purchases through and hits to your website. These functions include:
5. absolute
6. Square root
7. rounded

PHP is a server-side language. This means that PHP has access to any information that the server, and very little access to information the customer has. In fact, PHP has access to customer information that the client himself has given to the server. The fact that PHP is later server, it is very useful for:
8. embedding dynamic text in static text
9. integrating databases with websites

C programs are pre-compiled, which means in short that they need to be re-compiled each time you switch machines. Most Internet service providers or ISPs do not provide you with a C compiler Using PHP avoids this problem. If running on a server, it will usually work on another server that has it. And, most ISPs that provide server-side scripts PHP. Thus the final benefit is:
10. portability

With just a little effort to learn and use this language, PHP will increase the functionality of your site, make more efficient for both the site owner and the customer.

About the Author:

PHP is also flexible in that it can be easily integrated with almost any web-related software package of note. Everything from Flash to MySQL and even the ever present Java can all be integrated to work with PHP.

The New Language of Toys

Many young children with special needs experience language delays and need additional help to build language skills. What better way to encourage communication development than through play? The completely updated third edition of THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, a perennial favorite of parents, speech-language pathologists, and early interventionists, offers a plan for doing just that. The new edition presents sixty-five new toys and accompanying toy dialogs to use with children with a wide range of special needs from birth through age six. These sample toy dialogs show parents how to play purposefully with their child–using store-bought and homemade toys–to provide language learning opportunities and stimulate language development. The exercises are fun and educational, too, as parents help their child build receptive language skills (understanding), expressive language skills (communicating), and speech. THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS is organized by language developmental ages and each section includes: toy dialogs numerous photographs a toy list a list of suggested vocabulary and communication concepts children?s book bibliography a checklist to track progress In addition, this book provides important background information about language, its sequential development, the causes of language delays, and how play can enhance language development. It also explains the use of videos, DVDs, television, and the computer as language enhancers. The resource lists are extensive, offering toy manufacturers and catalogs, support organizations, children?s book information, and suggested materials for homemade toys. With THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, parents can help their children make gains in their language development and have an enjoyable and rewarding experience while doing it. It?s also a great tool for collaboration between parents and professionals.

Political Support and Language Choice of TibetanPolitical Communities

Political Support and Language Choice of TibetanPolitical Communities

The legitimacy of Chinese Community Party rule overTibet is one of the most sensitive political issuesfor China. Despite the claim of historicalsovereignty by the CCP and China’s egalitarianpolicies over ethnic minorities, the legitimacy ofthe CCP’s rule of the area is still questioned. Thelegitimacy of rule lies in people’s trust and supportof the regime. Voluminous research seeks todemonstrate the political support that Tibetan peoplehave for the CCP regime. Little of it, however, isbased on public opinion through empirical studies.Empirical studies are needed to explain the originsof community identity and political support in Tibet. This book suggests that language choice is a reliableindicator of community identity in Tibet fortheoretical, historical, and practical reasons.Tibetan, Mandarin, and English are three languagechoices that are used to indicate three identitiesand three political communities in this paper. Usingthe data, this book demonstrates the patterns ofidentity of Tibetan students with survey data. I alsouse empirical evidence to test the attitudinal anddemographic sources of the students’ variation intheir community identities.

The New Language of Business

“This book clearly shows how today’s industry pressures and business challenges mandate renewal of the contract between organizations and their IT assets and people–and it illustrates how a service-oriented approach to IT can help organizations go through the necessary transformation. The role of governance in bringing IT and business closer together is particularly well explained, and the book is worth reading for that alone.” –Neil Ward-Dutton, Research Director, Macehiter Ward-Dutton “It’s easy to pay lip service to the concept of business/IT alignment, but in The New Language of Business, Sandy Carter walks the walk. Few treatments of SOA ground this admittedly difficult topic in the world of business as thoroughly as Sandy has here. I’d recommend this book to any business reader who wants to leverage IT to make their business more agile and innovative, and to any technical reader who wishes to understand how to place SOA in the business context where it belongs.” –Jason Bloomberg, Senior Analyst and Principal, ZapThink LLC “A very valuable read. In today’s globally connected marketplace profitable growth requires business flexibility and continuous innovation, both of which are increasingly proving to be impossible without business modularity and the new table-stakes technology SOA.” –Ron Williams, Professor, Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill “Sandy has provided a pragmatic and holistic perspective on Service Oriented Architectures. She adds credibility by sharing IBM’s in-depth customer research as well as case studies to support the findings. The book is a strong source book for those wanting to get started with SOA.” –Judith Hurwitz, President & CEO, Hurwitz & Associates, coauthor, Service Oriented Architectures for Dummies “Few people have thought as long or as hard about SOA as Sandy Carter. This book embodies her invaluable work and the work of many at IBM to research, define, deploy and make SOA happen. Useful not just from a SOA perspective, but also as a concise articulation of the contemporary concepts fundamental to understanding where business and IT are heading.” –Carol Baroudi, coauthor Service Oriented Architecture For Dummies, Senior Analyst, Aberdeen Group “The New Language of Business: SOA & Web 2.0 is based on the collective feedback from industry leaders at organizations of all sizes, in more than 50 countries, who shared their views, experiences, and challenges of aligning technology with business goals.” –From the foreword by Steve Mills, Senior Vice President and Group Executive, IBM Software Group There is now a direct, provable link between an organization’s flexibility and business performance. Language Transfer

Language Transfer

$32.48

The author shows how similarities and differences between languages can influence grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation acquisition. In the paperback edition, Terence Odlin reconsiders a question that many language teachers and educational researchers have addressed: How much influence can a learner’s native language have in making the acquisition of a new language easy or difficult? Transfer has long been a controversial issue, but many recent studies support the view that cross-linguistic influences can have an important impact on second language acquisition. Odlin analyzes and interprets research showing many ways in which similarities and differences between languages can influence the acquisition of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In addition, he provides a detailed look at work on other areas important for the study of transfer, including discourse, individual variation, and sociolinguistic factors. Language teachers, applied linguists, and educational researchers will find this volume highly accessible and extremely valuable to their work.

”Judith Lindfors, whose widely used texts on early language acquisition have informed generations of college students, returns in this book to her own one-on-one collaboration with children. Her newest book informs and educates us, but, above all, it inspires us to become better teachers.” –From the Foreword by Vivian Gussin Paley ”Judith Lindfors once again helps us better understand the complex relationships between children’s language, their learning, and the teacher to see new possibilities for supporting literacy. This is a valuable resource for teacher educators.” –Gail Perry, New Books Editor, Young Children ”Children’s Language offers a return to sanity in children’s early literacy development — an appeal for ‘joy in a literate community’ with logic and evidence to support it.” –Peter Johnston, the University at Albany-SUNY ”Once again, with her unique insights, Judith Lindfors describes and updates children’s oral and written language development to inform those of us who work with young children.” –Yetta M. Goodman, Regents Professor Emerita, University of Arizona, College of Education ”Children’s Language gives us a front row seat at a spectacular show. This book should appeal to anyone who has ever been intrigued by young children s language learning.” –Carole Edelsky, Arizona State University The more teachers understand about how children learn to talk, the more they can help children become avid, joyful readers and writers. Drawing on a large body of research and her own volunteer work at a family shelter, Lindfors concisely identifies several important commonalities across oral and written language. Taking the compelling perspective that it’s all language, she traces children’s emergent literacy from infancy through the early school years. The book incorporates abundant examples from a diverse range of children engaged in authentic literacy experiences. Lindfors describes a set of language principles that teachers can build on as they help young students learn to read and write using the oral language processes they already know. The book contains a new, more positive ”language acquisition perspective” on children’s literacy, fascinating and insightfully framed quotes, writings, and drawings from children, a 24-page Guide for Instructors and Teacher Study Groups, available for download, and an Appendix containing an interview with shelter staff from SafePlace and offering basic information on how to identify children who are living in situations of violence and what teachers can do about it.

The Sixth Language

The Sixth Language

$37.48

The first edition of the Sixth Language, published in 2000, was a recipient of the Susanne K. Langer Prize of the Media Ecology Association for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Symbolic Form. This second edition includes 37 new pages in a new Foreword and Afterword where Logan reports on a number of new developments in his research into the origin and evolution of language. The Sixth Language updates the work of Marshall McLuhan by applying his ideas to the communications revolution taking place due to digital information technology. Logan’s work interweaves ideas which touch on language, education, work, social class, information technology and management theory. He establishes the theoretical background for his study with a succinct and very readable summary of McLuhan’s ideas. Logan develops a new theory of language by showing that a language is not merely a system of communication but also an information processing tool. He goes on to show that speech, writing, mathematics, science, computing and the Internet form an evolutionary chain of verbal languages. As Logan weaves his tale of the development of language he also shows how new educational, social, political and economic institutions arise. Turning to education Logan shows how the evolution of language led to the evolution of education. He explains that the reason our schools are so out of touch is that they are Industrial Age institutions trying desperately to meet the needs of the Internet Age and the Knowledge Era. He suggests a radical new way of remedying the malaise of education by proposing that the core curriculum focus on the generic skills associated with the use of the six languages of speech, writing, math, science, computing and the Internet. He contends that the actual content of the curriculum, the topics that are studied are not important and should be chosen to cater to the students’ interests. Once students have mastered the six languages they are then in a position to learn whatever topics or material they require for their work or their personal interest. Logan proposes an equally radical rethinking of training and education in the work place. Logan closes his book with a chapter on the Internet in which he shows how this medium recaptures the spirit of oral culture. He demonstrates that the new level of connectivity requires more than the mere re-engineering of business processes such as marketing, advertising, sales, customer support, and market research. According to Logan, it requires an actual alignment of these processes because of the way in which they are integrated by the Internet. "Logan was a young colleague of Marshall McLuhan at the University of Toronto and brings a richness of linkage between McLuhan’s vision and its fruition in the internet age. While the book gives many practical overviews, it is more a book of comprehension than of instruction. The internet age is upon us, but many firms are not at the point of u…

Learning to Read in a New Language

Learning to Read in a New Language

$45.95

[This book] is a helpful edition to a field where there is a limited amount of good literature to support teachers dealing with second language acquisition in the classroom' – ESCalate. `Gregory's book is an important and timely contribution to the literature on literacy, biliteracy, second language learning and early childhood education, synthesizing cutting-edge research, perspectives and teaching approaches in a clear and accessible way. Overall, it is a terrific resource' – Dinah Volk. Across the world, an increasing number of young children are learning to read in languages different from their mother tongue, and there is a clear need for a book which addresses the ways in which these children should be taught. Eve Gregory's book is unique in doing so. Building upon the ideas proposed in Making Sense of a New World, this second edition widens its scope, arguing for the limitations of policies designed for 'monolingual minds' in favour of methodologies which put plurilingualism at the centre of literacy tuition. This book offers a practical reading programme — an 'Inside-Out' (starting from experience) and 'Outside-In' (starting from literature) approach to teaching which can be used with individuals, small groups and whole classes. It uses current sociocultural theory, while drawing on examples of children from America, Australia, Britain, China, France, Singapore, South Africa and Thailand who are engaged in learning to read nursery rhymes and songs, storybooks, letters, the Bible and the Qur'an as well as school texts, in languages they do not speak fluently. Gregory argues that, in order for literacy tuition to be successful, reading must make sense — children must feel part of a community of readers. There is no common method which they use to learn, but rather a shared aim to which they aspire: making sense of a new world through new words. Eve Gregory is Professor of Language and Culture in Education at Goldsm

When Ben Duncan chronicled his evolution from a Depression-era orphan in Alabama to an Oxford educated writer and commentator in England in 1962, he was unable to tell his whole story. He revealed much–a harrowing childhood, his tenacity and drive for self-definition and self-creation. But he also hid crucial parts of his life that would remain masked for fifty years. As a gay man living in Great Britain at a time when homosexuality was aggressively prosecuted in the courts, Duncan was forced to hide an essential feature of his life and identity. Now, in The Same Language, Duncan tells his story anew, weaving throughout his original memoir italic passages that reveal the true circumstances of his life–dire, humorous, and angry by turns–and honor the kinds of love, sexuality, and support that animated and defined his existence.Shifting from past to present and back again, Duncan tells of growing up in a string of foster homes, joining the military, earning a scholarship to Oxford, and negotiating the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of English immigration officials determined to keep him out. But here also is Duncan’s account of his evolving sexuality, the many masks he was forced to contrive for survival and acceptance, and a vivid rendering of the underground world of gay life at every level of academia, politics, class, and social life in 50s and 60s-era Britain. An alien in his adopted country, an alien by nature of his sexual orientation, Duncan’s story is a touching chronicle of one man’s search for home–in a new country, with a man he loves, and within himself–a life no longer masked, but his own.

Virtual Machine Support for Aspect-Oriented Programming Languages

Virtual Machine Support for Aspect-Oriented Programming Languages

$111.98

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is, like structured, logic, functional or object-oriented programming, a programming paradigm in its own right. Until recently, many of the different AOP language implementations lacked the kind of support for the paradigm’s core mechanisms that is common for mechanisms of other paradigms: direct support from the run-time environment. For example, virtual machines for object-oriented programming languages offer direct support for resolving virtual methods via method tables. Such support used to be available for aspect-oriented mechanisms only to a limited degree. Mostly, the implementation of a run-time environment for AOP languages was simulated at application level. In the course of this work, Steamloom was implemented, a virtual machine with explicit support for AOP mechanisms. Steamloom is an extension of an existing virtual machine for the Java programming language. It deeply integrates support for AOP mechanisms in the Java execution environment while not sacrificing performance, an important goal in programming language implementation.

This book addresses the issue of language contact in the context of child language acquisition. Lanza examines in detail the simultaneous acquisition of Norwegian and English by two first-born children in families living in Norway in which the mother is American and the father Norwegian. She connects psycholinguistic arguments with sociolinguistic evidence, adding a much-needed dimension of real language use in context to the psycholinguistic studies which have dominated the field. She draws upon evidence from other studies to support her claims concerning language dominance and the child’s differentiation between the two languages in relation to the situation, interlocutor, and the communicative demands of the context. She also addresses the question of whether or not the language mixing of infant bilingualism is conceptually different from the codeswitching of older bilinguals, thus helping to bridge the gap between these two fields of study.

$10.48

"Happiness is waiting for you. Believe in your ability. Cross your bridges. Listen to your heart. Your faith in tomorrow will always help you do what is right… and it will help you be strong along the path to recovery." – Collin McCarty Throughout time, much has been written on the subject of recovery and the benefits of living life one day at a time. This inspiring collection represents the best of those writings. It brings together thoughts, poetry, and prose by a diverse mix of philosophers, poets, writers, and noted healers whose wise words you will want to read again and again. Whether you are recovering from an illness, a past experience, or a habit you are trying to break, it’s important to remember that with each new day comes the opportunity to start over. At any time, you can choose to refocus your life in a more positive direction, to replace worry and fear with serenity and acceptance, and to rediscover the person you were meant to be. The reassuring messages found within the pages of this book are meant to make the process a little easier by providing uplifting words of advice, understanding, and support. On the road to recovery, there will be many twists and turns, and life won’t always be what you want it to be. But, like any journey, the best way to begin… is one step at a time. With each small advance and by believing in your own ability to make it through, you can achieve your dream of recovery and a happier, healthier… you. "Our lives are made up of a million moments, spent in a million different ways. Some are spent searching for love, peace, and harmony. Others are spent surviving day to day. But there is no greater moment than when we find that life — with all its joys and sorrows — is meant to be lived one day at a time." – Regina Hill

The Language of God

The Language of God

$19.98

Does science necessarily undermine faith in God? Or could it actually support faith? Beyond the flashpoint debates over the teaching of evolution, or stem-cell research, most of us struggle with contradictions concerning life’s ultimate question. We know that accidents happen, but we believe we are on earth for a reason. Until now, most scientists have argued that science and faith occupy distinct arenas. Francis Collins, a former atheist as a science student who converted to faith as he became a doctor, is about to change that.Collins’s faith in God has been confirmed and enhanced by the revolutionary discoveries in biology that he has helped to oversee. He has absorbed the arguments for atheism of many scientists and pundits, and he can refute them. Darwinian evolution occurs, yet, as he explains, it cannot fully explain human nature — evolution can and must be directed by God. He offers an inspiring tour of the human genome to show the miraculous nature of God’s instruction book. Sure to be compared with C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, this is a stunning document, whether you are a believer, a seeker, or an atheist.

Language Development and Learning to Read

Language Development and Learning to Read

$24.48

Research on reading has tried, and failed, to account for wide disparities in reading skill even among children taught by the same method. Why do some children learn to read easily and quickly while others, in the same classroom and taught by the same teacher, don’t learn to read at all? In Language Development and Learning to Read, Diane McGuinness examines scientific research that might explain these disparities. She focuses on reading predictors, analyzing the effect individual differences in specific perceptual, linguistic, and cognitive skills may have on a child’s ability to read. Because of the serious methodological problems she finds in the existing research on reading, many of the studies McGuinness cites come from other fields — developmental psychology, psycholinguistics, and the speech and hearing sciences — and provide a new perspective on which language functions matter most for reading and academic success. McGuinness first examines the phonological development theory — the theory that phonological awareness follows a developmental path from words to syllables to phonemes — which has dominated reading research for thirty years, and finds that research evidence from other disciplines does not support the theory. McGuinness then looks at longitudinal studies on the development of general language function, and finds a "tantalizing connection" between core language functions and reading success. Finally, she analyzes mainstream reading research, which links reading ability to specific language skills, and the often flawed methodology used in these studies. McGuinness’s analysis shows the urgent need for a shift in our thinking about how to achieve reading success.

Do Not Leave Your Language Alone

Do Not Leave Your Language Alone

$24.48

This book, focused on corpus planning in language policy, provides a broad, integrative framework and also discusses multiple languages in detail. It provides readers with great familiarity with a wide range of language cases and at the same time gives them the theoretical tools and analysis to see how they inter-relate. The novelty of this volume is twofold: First, it deals with corpus planning alone (modernizing a language per se), and second, it does so in terms of a systematization of the often unconscious language status aspirations that both guide language planners themselves and motivate the lay public (the target population of all language planning). Corpus planning is going on all over the world today and inevitably becomes an expression of the societal goals, ideologies, and aspirations of the societies and cultures that support it. The implication is that the distinction between corpus and status planning, which has a long tradition in language planning research, must be critically re-examined. DO NOT Leave Your Language Alone: The Hidden Status Agendas Within Corpus Planning in Language Policy begins with a brief introduction to language planning as a whole, to corpus planning in particular, and to the unavoidability of a status component in the execution of all corpus planning past, present, and future. Topics of the central chapters include: ? corpus planning and status planning: separates, opposites, or Siamese twins?; ? the directions and dimensions of corpus planning; ? does "folksiness" come before or after "cleanliness"?; ? the bi-polar dimension of uniqueness vs. Westernization; ? the classicization vs. "panification" bi-polar dimension; ? the Ausbau vs. Einbau bi-polar dimension; ? the interdependence and independence of dimensional clusters; and ? can opposites and incommensurables be combined? Written at an introductory level assuming no prior knowledge of the field, this book is intended as a text for higher undergraduate and lower graduate level courses in language planning and policy. It is equally valuable for researchers in the field of language planning, policy, and politics, as well as those in sociolinguistics, political science, and communication studies more generally?that is, for all who are interested in fostering or limiting human intervention in the language change processes that are ongoing worldwide. Finally, an introduction to corpus planning that is full of historical vignettes, good humor, visual illustrations, and cutting-edge thought!

Kingdom Language - Volume One

Kingdom Language – Volume One

In this book Archibald describes two studies conducted within a parametric framework in the area of second language acquisition. The studies are designed to investigate the acquisition of English stress patterns (via both production and perception tasks) by adult speakers of Polish and Hungarian. Archibald argues that interlanguage grammars can be understood as a mix of L1 transfer and the effects of Universal Grammar. Metrical parameters related to such things as quantity–sensitivity, extrametricality, and word–tree dominance determine the structure of the interlanguage. The author reports that the subjects are remarkably successful at acquiring English stress and do not appear to violate proposed universals of metrical phonology. This book is one of the few attempts to investigate the acquisition of L2 phonology within a UG framework. Empirical support is provided for the parametric model to an extent uncommon in most syntactic studies.

The Search for the Perfect Language (The Making of Europe)

The Search for the Perfect Language (The Making of Europe)

$23.98

The idea that there once existed a language which perfectly and unambiguously expressed the essence of all possible things and concepts has occupied the minds of philosophers, theologians, mystics and others for at least two millennia. This is an investigation into the history of that idea and of its profound influence on European thought, culture and history. From the early Dark Ages to the Renaissance it was widely believed that the language spoken in the Garden of Eden was just such a language, and that all current languages were its decadent descendants from the catastrophe of the Fall and at Babel. The recovery of that language would, for theologians, express the nature of divinity, for cabbalists allow access to hidden knowledge and power, and for philosophers reveal the nature of truth. Versions of these ideas remained current in the Enlightenment, and have recently received fresh impetus in attempts to create a natural language for artificial intelligence. The story that Umberto Eco tells ranges widely from the writings of Augustine, Dante, Descartes and Rousseau, arcane treatises on cabbalism and magic, to the history of the study of language and its origins. He demonstrates the initimate relation between language and identity and describes, for example, how and why the Irish, English, Germans and Swedes – one of whom presented God talking in Swedish to Adam, who replied in Danish, while the serpent tempted Eve in French – have variously claimed their language as closest to the original. He also shows how the late eighteenth-century discovery of a proto-language (Indo-European) for the Aryan peoples was perverted to support notions of racial superiority. To this subtle exposition of a history of extraordinary complexity, Umberto Eco links the associated history of the manner in which the sounds of language and concepts have been written and symbolized. Lucidly and wittily written, the book is, in sum, a tour de force of scholarly detection and cultural interpretation, providing a series of original perspectives on two thousand years of European History. The paperback edition of this book is not available through Blackwell outside of North America.

Learning to Classify Text Using Support Vector Machines

Learning to Classify Text Using Support Vector Machines

$141.48

Text Classification, or the task of automatically assigning semantic categories to natural language text, has become one of the key methods for organizing online information. Since hand-coding classification rules is costly or even impractical, most modern approaches employ machine learning techniques to automatically learn text classifiers from examples. However, none of these conventional approaches combines good prediction performance, theoretical understanding, and efficient training algorithms. Based on ideas from Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Learning To Classify Text Using Support Vector Machines presents a new approach to generating text classifiers from examples. The approach combines high performance and efficiency with theoretical understanding and improved robustness. In particular, it is highly effective without greedy heuristic components. The SVM approach is computationally efficient in training and classification, and it comes with a learning theory that can guide real-world applications. Learning To Classify Text Using Support Vector Machines gives a complete and detailed description of the SVM approach to learning text classifiers, including training algorithms, transductive text classification, efficient performance estimation, and a statistical learning model of text classification. In addition, it includes an overview of the field of text classification, making it self-contained even for newcomers to the field. This book gives a concise introduction to SVMs for pattern recognition, and it includes a detailed description of how to formulate text-classification tasks for machine learning. Learning To Classify Text Using Support Vector Machines is designed as a reference for researchers and practitioners, and is suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level students in Computer Science within Machine Learning and Language Technology.

Unfair mythologies about English language learners have sprung up in schools around the country. Unsure how to help nonnative speakers write, some teachers and administrators have resorted to deficit-based stereotypes: ELLs can’t write They have writing problems They are reluctant writers They need to be taught the skills of writing before writing independently. In reality, however, ELLs benefit from the same smart, research-based instructional strategies as mainstream student writers, and in When English Language Learners Write, Katharine Davies Samway explores second language writers, shattering myths and in their place offering meaningful insight into powerful instruction. When English Language Learners Write helps you connect the latest thinking on ELLs and language acquisition to your everyday classroom practices. Samway helps you understand numerous important factors affecting nonnative writers, including:what young children know about print and about the connection between oral and written languagehow their native language influences the process of learning to write in Englishhow gender, race, ethnicity, and social class affect writinghow adult expectations, school-based writing experiences, and participation in bilingual classrooms affect children’s development as writerswhich current developments in writing pedagogy help the most. Then she shows you crucial steps to take for instruction that’s responsive to language learners’ needs, such as:understanding the literacy practices of non-mainstream cultures discovering what ELLs can do as writers before they become fluent in Englishmoving from looking at only the writing itself, to investigating writers’ processes providing a print-rich environment to cement the readingwriting connection and foster literate behaviors in a new tongueincorporating reflective writing such as logs and dialogue journals to support ELLs’ literacy developmentproviding a learner-centered workshop approach to teaching writing. Not only does Samway provide a window into the latest research as well as practical teaching ideas, she takes you inside the minds and classroom experiences of five ELLs. She documents the ways they think, the products of their learning, and their progress as writers. You’ll see firsthand how an instructional focus on what children can do helps nonnative speakers become fluid English writers more quickly than placing them in low-performing groups or falling back on pullout remediation.
