new language arts teacher
Should a language arts and literature teacher disable kids from writing about hunting?

So my class got a new teacher and she asked us to not write about hunting and violence related to that because it makes her sad for the poor animals out there. Do you think it is OK for her to say those views she has????

Besides a very few select topics, teachers need to be totally neutral about things that are considered controversy. For this exact reason.

As a black person I find the slavery and the civil war very painful eras in American History, but as a history teacher I can’t say “we are going to skip slavery and the Civil War because it makes me sad.”

I’m in a New Jersey Workbook

Shakespeare's Use of the Arts of Language

Shakespeare’s Use of the Arts of Language

$25.48

Grammar-school students in Shakespeare’s time were taught to recognize the two hundred figures of speech that Renaissance scholars had derived from Latin and Greek sources (from amphibologia through onomatopoeia to zeugma). This knowledge was one element in their thorough grounding in the liberal arts of logic, grammar, and rhetoric, known as the trivium. In Shakespeare’s Use of the Arts of Language Sister Miriam Joseph writes: "The extraordinary power, vitality, and richness of Shakespeare’s language are due in part to his genius, in part to the fact that the unsettled linguistic forms of his age promoted to an unusual degree the spirit of creativeness, and in part to the theory of composition then prevailing . . . The purpose of this study is to present to the modern reader the general theory of composition current in Shakespeare’s England." The author then lays out those figures of speech in simple, understandable patterns and explains each one with examples from Shakespeare. Her analysis of his plays and poems illustrates that the Bard knew more about rhetoric than perhaps anyone else! Originally published in 1947, this book is a classic."Sister Miriam Joseph’s Shakespeare’s Use of the Arts of Language remains, after more than half a century, an immensely valuable aid to serious students of the greatest of all writers. The book manifests enormous learning and real wisdom in applying that erudition to the needs of contemporary readers."-Harold Bloom

Building Academic Language

Building Academic Language

$19.48

Many students, ranging from native English speakers to recent immigrants, need help in understanding and using the language of school. Language is the lifeblood of learning in all content areas, and it plays a major role in academic achievement. Building Academic Language explains the functions and features of academic language that every teacher (language arts, history, math, & science teachers, etc.) should know for supporting academic reading, writing, and discussion. The book includes research-based instructional and assessment activities that content teachers can use to build students’ abilities to understand and describe the many abstract concepts, higher-order thinking skills, and complex relationships in a discipline. The book emphasizes an approach that builds from students’ existing ways of learning and communicating, scaffolding them to think and talk as content area experts think and talk about math, science, history, and language arts. Major topics and themes include: What is academic language and how does it differ by content area? How can language-building activities (discussions, small groups, etc.) support content understanding? How can we build language abilities for content reading and writing – and vice versa? How can we build on students’ diverse ways of understanding, learning, and communicating about the world? How can we more effectively model and scaffold academic language in our teaching and assessment?

The Classroom Teacher’s Guide to Music Education

$79.48

Suggestions, class descriptions, and lesson plans are given for using music for routine activities, whole language, integrating music into language arts and social studies, and using music to develop the cultural literacy of students. The second edition includes contemporary thought on the philosophical rationales for music education, results of recent research in music education, and an expanded Chapter 5 on Music to Enhance the Learning Environment. Chapter 5 includes new greeting songs, a section on using music to teach topics and concepts throughout the elementary curri- culum, and more suggestions for music and language arts. New songs are also included in the folk song appendix.
