Why You Need a Foreign Language & How to Learn One

$19.98

In the age of globalization, English-speakers have largely neglected the languages of others, trusting instead in the promise of an international version of English. In Why You Need a Foreign Language & How to Learn One, author Edward Trimnell makes a contrarian case for a renewed emphasis on foreign language skills in the United States, Great Britain, and elsewhere in the English-speaking world. Drawing on topics as wide-ranging as military intelligence and international business, Trimnell explains why our neglect of foreign languages makes us dangerously dependent on the language skills of others. The book also explores the "truth and the hype" about English as an international language, and explains the functional limitations of English as a global means of communication. Finally, the book describes techniques and resources that businesspersons and other professionals can use to acquire a language through independent study.

Why Didn't I Learn This in College?

Why Didn’t I Learn This in College?

$22.48

Because participants in our workshop series, Instruction for All Students, often ask, "Why didn’t we learn this in college?" that question provided the inspiration for the title of this new book for teachers new to the classroom. This title is in no way meant to condemn those who direct our collegiate experiences. The realities are that we may well have studied these topics and earned a good grade on a test over the theoretical aspects of this information but had no classroom teaching experiences on which to hook the information, that we took an alternative approach to entering the profession, that our focus was elsewhere at the time or perhaps, in fact, it was not taught. Whatever the case may be, teachers new to the classroom clearly need support and a repertoire of effective teaching strategies during their first years of classroom work. Why Didn’t I Learn This in College? is based on the constructs that: + the best management program is a good instructional program, + if the end we have in mind is student learning, we do not want to concentrate on control and compliance but rather on building learning centered environments, and + we need efficient and effective organizational systems for ourselves, our students, and our classroom.

Approximately how many languages compose the Bantu language group of central and southern Africa? What is the name of the language spoken in Hawaii by an estimated two thousand people? What Western European language is not known to be related to any other language family in the world — and is considered by linguists to be one of the most difficult to learn? These are only a few of the questions language lovers, linguists, and lay readers will be able to answer with the Dictionary of Languages — an easy-to-navigate, authoritative guide to the world’s languages and language groups at the end of the twentieth century. Andrew Dalby had the needs and interests of general readers in mind when he compiled this comprehensive reference work — most other language guides are written for scholars, and many include little or none of the absorbing social, cultural, geographic, and historical details that are brought together here.In the Dictionary of Languages, readers will find:?a selection of four hundred languages and language groups, arranged alphabetically, with rich, detailed descriptions of the genesis, development, and current status of each;?more than two hundred maps displaying where the languages are spoken today;?sidebars showing alphabets, numerals, and other enriching facts?a comprehensive index listing additional languages, guiding readers to the nearest language groups with full writeups and maps;?charts breaking down large language groups — such as Bantu or Austroasiatic languages — by geographic region and approximate number of speakers. In a world where geopolitical boundaries often explain little about the people that live within them, where we may read about Kurd and Khmer in the same newspaper and be expected to be conversant about each — if not conversant in each — Dalby’s single, information-packed volume helps us make sense of the rich mosaic of world languages.

Programming Languages

Programming Languages

$3.98

Exceptionally comprehensive in approach, this book explores the major issues in both design and implementation of modern programming languages and provides a basic introduction to the underlying theoretical models on which these languages are based. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental concepts—readers learn important ideas, not minor language differences–but several languages are highlighted in sufficient detail to enable readers to write programs that demonstrate the relationship between a source program and its execution behavior–e.g., C, C++, JAVA, ML, LISP, Prolog, Smalltalk, Postscript, HTML, PERL, FORTRAN, Ada, COBOL, BASIC SNOBOL4, PL/I, Pascal. Begins with a background review of programming languages and the underlying hardware that will execute the given program; then covers the underlying grammatical model for programming languages and their compilers (elementary data types, data structures and encapsulation, inheritance, statements, procedure invocation, storage management, distributed processing, and network programming). Includes an advanced chapter on language semantics–program verification, denotational semantics, and the lambda calculus. For computer engineers and others interested in programming language designs.

Learning to Read Across Languages

Learning to Read Across Languages

$48.98

This book systematically examines how learning to read occurs in diverse languages, and in so doing, explores how literacy is learned in a second language by learners who have achieved at least basic reading skills in their first language. As a consequence of rapid globalization, such learners are a large and growing segment of the school population worldwide, and an increasing number of schools are challenged by learners from a wide variety of languages, and with distinct prior literacy experiences. To succeed academically these learners must develop second-language literacy skills, yet little is known about the ways in which they learn to read in their first languages, and even less about how the specific nature and level of their first-language literacy affects second-language reading development. This volume provides detailed descriptions of five typologically diverse languages and their writing systems, and offers comparisons of learning-to-read experiences in these languages. Specifically, it addresses the requisite competencies in learning to read in each of the languages, ,how language and writing system properties affect the way children learn to read, and the extent and ways in which literacy learning experience in one language can play a role in subsequent reading development in another. Both common and distinct aspects of literacy learning experiences across languages are identified, thus establishing a basis for determining which skills are available for transfer in second-language reading development. Learning to Read Across Languages is intended for researchers and advanced students in the areas of second-language learning, psycholinguistics, literacy, bilingualism, and cross-linguistic issues in language processing.

The Emergence of Pidgin and Creole Languages

The Emergence of Pidgin and Creole Languages

$52.48

This book provides explanations for the emergence of contact languages, especially pidgins and creoles. It assesses the current state of research and examines aspects of current theories and approaches that have excited much controversy and debate. The book answers questions such as: How validis the notion of a pidgin-creole-postcreole life cycle? Why are many features of pidgins and creoles simple in formal terms compared to other languages? And what is the origin of the grammatical innovations in expanded pidgins and creoles – linguistic universals, conventional language change, theinfluence of features of languages in the contact environment, or a mix of two or more factors? In addressing these issues, the author looks at research on processes of second language acquisition and use, including simplification, overgeneralization, and language transfer. He shows how theseprocesses can account for many of the characteristics of contact languages, and proposes linguistic and sociolinguistic constraints on their application in language contact. His analysis is supported with detailed examples and case studies from Pidgin Fijian, Melanesian Pidgin, Hawai’i Creole, NewCaledonian Tayo and Australian Kriol, which he uses as well to assess the merits of competing theories of language genesis. Professor Siegel also considers his research’s wider implications for linguistic theory.

How have human societies spread across the continents? How have cultural innovations affected the growth and spread of populations? What is the connection between genes and languages? Schools That Learn

$26.98

First published in 2000, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN introduced the groundbreaking Fifth Discipline organizational principles to the world of education. This comprehensive revision addresses the increasing challenges facing our educational system and presents practical advice on how schools can use the principles of organizational learning to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. Few would argue that schools today are in trouble. In the age of “No Child Left Behind,” when students, teachers, parents, and school boards are weighed down by increasing pressures, standardized tests are being used as “quick fixes,” school violence is growing, advances in science and technology threaten to outpace teachers’ effectiveness, and the average tenure of a school district superintendent is less than three years, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN offers much-needed advice on how we can overcome these persistent problems that threaten our educational system. Drawing upon experience and advice from prominent educators, teachers, principals, business and community leaders, parents, and students from across the country, the authors offer clear guidelines for how to implement the principles of organizational learning in the classroom, and explain why these practices work. The book features stories and anecdotes from the classroom and the community; charts, tables and diagrams to illustrate learning principles; individual and team exercises for both educators and students; and recommendations for related books, articles, Web sites, and other resources. This updated and revised edition of a decisive and influential work is invaluable for everyone involved in a dialogue about how to better educate our children in the twenty-first century.

Learning Artificial Languages

Learning Artificial Languages

$90.48

If Universal Grammar (UG) can aid adult second language acquisition an important question arises: are linguistic principles that are not active in the native language also accessible to second language learners? This question of adult accessibility to UG is addressed by investigating whether a specific phonological principle that does not exist in the subjects’ native language is accessible to adult learners. Artificial languages were constructed to compare the acquisition of a stress system that follows a natural phonological principle with one that is almost identical to the same principle, but differs in one feature, thus making it an "unnatural" system. If second language learners have access to innate universal linguistic principles they should be better able to learn the natural rule over the unnatural one. The positive results lend support to the idea of adult second language learners having access to UG. This book should be of interest to educators and researchers in the fields of artificial language learning, second language acquisition and phonological stress or those with a general interest in laboratory phonology.

Lets Learn Kanji

Lets Learn Kanji

$21.98

Everyone agrees that it is possible to learn to speak Japanese in a reasonable amount of time, but no one has ever said that about reading and writing it. It is widely held that spoken and written Japanese require separate efforts by the student, as if these two aspects were in fact distinct languages. A first step toward alleviating this situation was taken by Yasuko Mitamura in 1985 with the publication of Let’s Learn Hiragana and Let’s Learn Katakana, which continue to help thousands of students every year to master these two forms of Japanese script. Now, Let’s Learn Kanji goes to the heart of the problem: the learning of kanji (i.e., Chinese characters as they are used in Japan). Not simply a brilliant exposition but also a workbook, it teaches the student how to write the basic strokes, how to put these together into full-fledged kanji, and how kanji function in the context of example sentences. Progress is continually checked, and the student is encouraged through quizzes and exercises. The result: 250 fundamental characters learned almost painlessly.

In a small diner at a location so remote that it stands in the middle of the middle of nowhere, John-a man in a hurry-is at a literal and figurative crossroads. Intent only on refueling before moving along on his road trip, John finds sustenance of an entirely different kind: in addition to the specials of the day, the menu lists three questions that all diners are encouraged to consider: Why are you here? Do you fear death? Are you fulfilled? With the guidance of three people he meets at the cafe, John embarks on a quest for answers that metaphorically takes him from the executive suites of the advertising world to the surf of Hawaii’s coastline. Along the way, he discovers a new way to look at his life and relationships… and just how much you can learn from a green sea turtle. The Why Cafe will get readers young and free and older and entrenched to rethink their personal yardstick for success. Charming, simple, and inspiring, it will change lives.

Why Shakespeare

Why Shakespeare

$21.48

Writing for a small troupe of men and boys who performed on an almost bare stage, William Shakespeare dramatized an unparalleled range of stories and emotions through his wizardry with words, his uncanny understanding of the human spirit, and his genius for maximizing the talents of his actors. Working under conditions that today we would consider primitive, he made himself into the supreme playwright. Exactly how does Shakespeare achieve his effects? Why does he continue to enthrall audiences performance after performance, night after night, century after century? By concentrating on a dozen of his best-known plays, and analyzing their structural and theatrical elements as well as their distinctive language, inventive plotting, and unique characters this book demystifies Shakespeare for all theater lovers. With its down-to-earth and jargon-free approach, Why Shakespeare enables us to step behind the curtain to learn why Shakespeare is considered the greatest dramatist of all time.

The Acquisition of Two Languages from Birth

The Acquisition of Two Languages from Birth

$59.98

This book deals with the question of how children exposed to two languages simultaneously from birth learn to speak those two languages. After a critical and comprehensive survey of most of the literature on the subject, the author concludes that empirically well-documented knowledge in this area is very scant indeed. The core of the book concerns a naturalistic study of a Dutch-English bilingual girl around the age of three. The study’s main aim is to explore the nature of early bilingual morphosyntactic development. Detailed analyses of most aspects of this development show that a child who hears two separate languages spoken to her reflects this distinctness in the utterances she produces: each language is handled as a system in its own right. Furthermore, the young bilingual three-year-old greatly resembles her monolingual peers in either language. Both these findings, the author concludes, highlight the language-specific nature of the morphosyntactic development process. This book will interest linguists, psycholinguists, developmental psychologists, and child language specialists.

Live & Learn

Live & Learn

$3.48

The latest Chrysalis Reader explores a facet of human nature that makes our species stand out: an insatiable curiosity, a desire to find answers. From the confessions of a professional student to the search for the miraculous, this collection of essays, short stories, poetry, and art wrestles with the question: What brings forth a questing spirit? This literary anthology looks inside the dynamic space where learning and teaching take place–as experienced in and sometimes in spite of the classroom, as well as beyond it. A teacher learns a hidden truth from what becomes for him an absurdity–the assigning of grades. A Midwestern community is forever changed by the courage of one student. A writer learns how to give the perfect dinner party by dining in the summers with the John Dos Passos family. Symbolic relationships between living and learning are evidened in Virginia Woolf’s neighborhood where, at an abandoned railway station, the significance of a diary entry brings a writer’s past into emotional focus. A humorist examines her disastrous early marriage to a sailor. A professional juggler adroitly handles the theoretical issues of multiple intelligences as played out in the business community. This issue will leave the reader with suggestions that may lead to the answers to some perennial questions: Which aspects of the learning process are universal, and which are individual? How do we foster lifelong learning? Why do we ask "Why"?

The Will to Learn

The Will to Learn

$90.98

Martin Covington introduces the basic principles of motivation in a readable, nontechnical form as they apply to classroom learning. He argues against the popular notion that the problems existing in schools today stem primarily from a lack of student motivation. Instead, he asserts that students are motivated, but often for the wrong reasons. Traditional teaching methods, including conventional grading procedures and an emphasis on competition, can contribute to student demoralization, and Covington identifies the ways in which students respond to misguided incentives. The book suggests practical, concrete ways that teachers can transform classroom incentives into a positive desire to learn. It features a series of illustrative exercises at the end of each chapter and includes the latest research on gender and ethnic differences in motivation and learning in schools.

And Sometimes Why

$3.98

From a contributing editor for Vogue, a pitch-perfect, funny, and poignant novel about the joy and heartache of how deeply one person’s life can affect so many others. With wit and warmth, first novel And Sometimes Why captures the fragile rhythm and unpredictable drama of family life. When Sophia and Darius say good- bye to their teenage daughters one unremarkable morning, they have no idea how permanently their family will be affected by a decision made around the breakfast table. One of the daughters will have a terrible accident, the other will meet a boy. Both events will change their lives forever. The accident will set in motion a chain of events involving Harry, the still handsome B-list celebrity host of a sadistic hit game show; Anton, a sexually repressed unemployed filmmaker; and Misty, who has reached month seven in what was supposed to be a six-month campaign to make something of herself. As Sophia and Darius cope with the impact of the accident on their relationship, their oldest daughter is faced with making a choice between seizing the day and hanging on to the past. All choose unexpected paths to the same conclusion. Profoundly honest, and rendered with a deft lightness of touch, And Sometimes Why is a novel about how quickly life can change and how we must learn to change with it.

Learn Prolog Now!

Learn Prolog Now!

$29.48

Prolog is a programming language, but a rather unusual one. “Prolog” is short for “Programming with Logic”, and the link with logic gives Prolog its special character. At the heart of Prolog lies a surprising idea: don’t tell the computer what to do. Instead, describe situations of interest, and compute by asking questions. Prolog will logically deduce new facts about the situations and give its deductions back to us as answers. Why learn Prolog? For a start, its “say what the problem is, rather than how to solve it” stance, means that it is a very high level language, good for knowledge rich applications such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and the semantic web. So by studying Prolog, you gain insight into how sophisticated tasks can be handled computationally. Moreover, Prolog requires a different mindset. You have to learn to see problems from a new perspective, declaratively rather than procedurally. Acquiring this mindset, and learning to appreciate the links between logic and programming, makes the study of Prolog both challenging and rewarding. Learn Prolog Now! is a practical introduction to this fascinating language. Freely available as a web-book since 2002 (see www.learnprolognow.org) Learn Prolog Now! has became one of the most popular introductions to the Prolog programming language, an introduction prized for its clarity and down-to-earth approach. It is widely used as a textbook at university departments around the world, and even more widely used for self study. College Publications is proud to present here the first hard-copy version of this online classic. Carefully revised in the light of reader’s feedback, and now with answers to all the exercises, here you will find the essential material required to help you learn Prolog now.

Learning How to Learn

Learning How to Learn

$32.98

For almost a century, educational theory and practice have been influenced by the view of behavioural psychologists that learning is synonymous with behavior change. In this book, the authors argue for the practical importance of an alternate view, that learning is synonymous with a change in the meaning of experience. They develop their theory of the conceptual nature of knowledge and describe classroom-tested strategies for helping students to construct new and more powerful meanings and to integrate thinking, feeling, and acting. In their research, they have found consistently that standard educational practices that do not lead learners to grasp the meaning of tasks usually fail to give them confidence in their abilities. It is necessary to understand why and how new information is related to what one already knows. All those concerned with the improvement of education will find something of interest in Learning How to Learn.

Electronic Chips & Systems Design Languages (The Chdl Series)

Electronic Chips & Systems Design Languages (The Chdl Series)

$259.48

Electronic Chips & Systems Design Languagesoutlines and describes the latest advances in design languages. The challenge of System on a Chip (SOC) design requires designers to work in a multi-lingual environment which is becoming increasingly difficult to master. It is therefore crucial for them to learn, almost in real time, from the experiences of their colleagues in the use of design languages and how these languages have become more advanced to cope with system design. System designers, as well as students willing to become system designers, often do not have the time to attend all scientific events where they could learn the necessary information. This book will bring them a selected digest of the best contributions and industry strength case studies. All the levels of abstraction that are relevant, from the informal user requirements down to the implementation specifications, are addressed by different contributors. The author, together with colleague authors who provide valuable additional experience, presents examples of actual industrial world applications. Furthermore the academic concepts presented in this book provide excellent theories to student readers and the concepts described are up to date and in so doing provide most suitable root information for Ph.D. postgraduates.
