The Discovery of Poetry

The Discovery of Poetry

$13.98

The bestselling author of Under the Tuscan Sun brings poetry out of the classroom and into the homes of everyday readers. Before she fell in love with Tuscany, Frances Mayes fell in love with verse. After publishing five books of poetry and teaching creative writing for more than twenty-five years, Mayes is no stranger to the subject. In The Discovery of Poetry, an accessible "field guide" to reading and writing poetry, she shares her passion with readers. Beginning with basic terminology and techniques, from texture and sound to rhyme and repetition, Mayes shows how focusing on one aspect of a poem can help you to better understand, appreciate, and enjoy the reading and writing experience. In addition to many creative and helpful composition ideas, following each lyrical and lively discussion is a thoughtful selection of poems. With its wonderful anthology from Shakespeare to Jamaica Kinkaid, The Discovery of Poetry is an insightful, invaluable guide to what Mayes calls "the natural pleasures of language-a happiness we were born to have."

New archaeological treasures and finds that reshape our view of the past, recounted by the discoverers themselves. An unprecedented look inside contemporary archaeology, Discovery! reveals the most exciting, significant, and astonishing finds from the last fifteen years. Many of the book’s contributions are written by the discoverers themselves, who give firsthand accounts of their work and assess the significance. They include famous Egyptologists such as Zahi Hawass, Kent Weeks, and Alain Zivie; pioneering underwater explorers such as Franck Goddio; and leading excavators and scientists from America, Britain, China, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, and elsewhere.Discovery! spans two million years of history, from the latest fossil discoveries that rewrite the story of human origins to wrecks of early submarines and ironclads from the American Civil War. There are revelations about the pyramids of Giza, a just-discovered royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings, and gold-filled burials of Assyrian queens at Nimrud, Iraq. Italy’s Ice Man and spectacular Inca mummies from high in the Andes bring us face to face with people from the past, while stunning wall paintings from San Bartolo in Guatemala revolutionize our knowledge of the ancient Maya.International in scope and totally authoritative, the book is illustrated throughout with spectacular photographs, many taken at the very moment of discovery. 295 illustrations and photographs, 290 in color.

Ambient Intelligence for Scientific Discovery

Ambient Intelligence for Scientific Discovery

$61.98

Many difficult scientific discovery tasks can only be solved in interactive ways, by combining intelligent computing techniques with intuitive and adaptive user interfaces. It is inevitable to use human intelligence in scientific discovery systems: human eyes can capture complex patterns and relationships, along with detecting the exceptional cases in a data set; the human brain can easily manipulate perceptions to make decisions. Ambient intelligence is about this kind of ubiquitous and autonomous human interaction with information. Scientific discovery is a process of creative perception and communication, dealing with questions like: how do we significantly reduce information while maintaining meaning, or how do we extract patterns from massive data and growing data resources. Originating from the SIGCHI Workshop on Ambient Intelligence for Scientific Discovery, this state-of-the-art survey is organized in three parts: new paradigms in scientific discovery, ambient cognition, and ambient intelligence systems. Many chapters share common features such as interaction, vision, language, and biomedicine.

A Discovery Of Strangers

A Discovery Of Strangers

$3.48

A Discovery of Strangers tells of the meeting of two civilizations – the first encounter of the nomadic Dene people with Europeans – in an imaginative reconstruction of John Franklin’s first map-making expedition in 1819—21 in what is now the Northwest Territories. At the heart of the novel is a love story between twenty-two-year-old midshipman Robert Hood, the Franklin expedition’s artist, and a fifteen-year-old Yellowknife girl known to the British as Greenstockings. A national bestseller, published also in Germany and China, Wiebe’s first novel in eleven years and his twelfth work of fiction won him his second Governor General’s Award for Fiction at the age of sixty, over strong competition from Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro. It is a story of love, murder, greed and passion in an unforgiving Arctic landscape. French-Canadian voyageurs paddle the small British expedition into the land of the Yellowknives to search for the fabled Northwest Passage. While this trip would not prove as disastrous as Franklin’s third expedition, nevertheless more than half his men did not survive the harsh conditions. The long winter stopover allows for interchange between the cultures. When the son of a Lancashire clergyman and the daughter of a native elder fall in love, they devise a language of their own to cross their wordless divide. Hood will not survive to see the birth of his daughter, perishing in 1821 in an attempt to reach Greenstockings’s band 450 kilometres south. Nor will the Yellowknives survive much longer: within twenty years, they will be all but wiped out by a smallpox epidemic brought by the white men.The novel is the work of a poetic mind, written in several voices: of the British explorers, of the Tetsot’ine people – named Yellowknife by the strangers – and, most unexpected of all, of the animals that live on the Barrenlands. Wiebe climbs inside the characters, bringing them and the North to life. “Most Canadians have never seen that landscape. Yet I see it as being at the centre of our national psyche. That’s the roots of our world, right there.” He began work on the novel in earnest following a canoe trip between the Coppermine River and the site of Fort Enterprize in 1988, when he was first enraptured by the landscape. The novel contains vivid images, such as stunning descriptions of caribou bursting through snow. In calling the Arctic ‘A Land Beyond Words,’ Wiebe admits how difficult it was to do it justice. “I think there’s always a total contradiction in even trying to do such a novel,” he said in an interview, “and yet it’s the very contradiction out of which any kind of artistic struggle must come. It’s not even worth trying if it doesn’t seem impossible.” In researching historical sources, Wiebe found letters, earlier accounts of the region such as those of Samuel Hearne, as well as…

Drugs-From Discovery to Approval

Drugs-From Discovery to Approval

$93.48

Statistics show that out of five thousand compounds with initial promise, five will go into human clinical trials, and only one will become an approved drug. What if there is more to Jesus than what the media portrays? What if there is more to Jesus than what your college professor might tell you? And what if there was a book of the Bible written to counter these common misconceptions about Jesus-to answer skeptics-to expose the truth. Would that change the way you view your life? Would it change your priorities? Values? The Discovery is a 21-day devotional journey through John’s Gospel that will challenge you to revisit, or visit for the first time, the Jesus of Scripture. The Jesus who is much more than a distorted icon of pop culture or an obscure figure in history. The Jesus who wants to open your eyes to a lifelong discovery-that your own identity is wrapped up in His. A worship leader and songwriter, Josh Via lives with his family in Charlotte, North Carolina. He and his wife travel together leading worship for churches and student/collegiate events. He also serves alongside his dad as the vice president of Rick Via World Reach Ministries, a mission organization committed to taking the Gospel of Jesus to hurting people all across the globe. Educated at Liberty University, North Greenville University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Josh has several degrees and accomplishments that you probably don’t care about. His finest accomplishments, however, include his strikingly beautiful and sympathetically patient wife, Tasha, his deviously crafty daughter, Areyna, and his relentlessly hungry son, Ezekiel. He sporadically blogs at www.joshvia.com.

Graphic Discovery

Graphic Discovery

$12.98

Good graphs make complex problems clear. From the weather forecast to the Dow Jones average, graphs are so ubiquitous today that it is hard to imagine a world without them. Yet they are a modern invention. This book is the first to comprehensively plot humankind’s fascinating efforts to visualize data, from a key seventeenth-century precursor–England’s plague-driven initiative to register vital statistics–right up to the latest advances. In a highly readable, richly illustrated story of invention and inventor that mixes science and politics, intrigue and scandal, revolution and shopping, Howard Wainer validates Thoreau’s observation that circumstantial evidence can be quite convincing, as when you find a trout in the milk. The story really begins with the eighteenth-century origins of the art, logic, and methods of data display, which emerged, full-grown, in William Playfair’s landmark 1786 trade atlas of England and Wales. The remarkable Scot singlehandedly popularized the atheoretical plotting of data to reveal suggestive patterns–an achievement that foretold the graphic explosion of the nineteenth century, with atlases published across the observational sciences as the language of science moved from words to pictures. Next come succinct chapters illustrating the uses and abuses of this marvelous invention more recently, from a murder trial in Connecticut to the Vietnam War’s effect on college admissions. Finally Wainer examines the great twentieth-century polymath John Wilder Tukey’s vision of future graphic displays and the resultant methods–methods poised to help us make sense of the torrent of data in our information-laden world.

What is a cataplasm, and what do you do with one? Would you be insulted if someone called you, "argillaceous?" Would you want someone to give you a clyster? Would you eat wappato? These are all words that were familiar to Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their companions, and were penned in their journals, but are less commonly used and understood today. To the rescue comes independent lexicographer and contributor to several Oxford dictionaries, Alan H. Hartley, who hopes to help modern readers better understand the language of the time. The result of five years of research on the history, people, and physical world of the expedition, the Lewis and Clark Lexicon of Discovery features over 1,100 entries and more than 2,000 illustrative quotations, as well as considerable background material on the English (and other languages) of the expedition.

The Atoms of Language

The Atoms of Language

$10.98

Whether all human languages are fundamentally the same or different has been a subject of debate for ages. This problem has deep philosophical implications: If languages are all the same, it implies a fundamental commonality–and thus mutual intelligibility–of human thought. We are now on the verge of solving this problem. Using a twenty-year-old theory proposed by the world’s greatest living linguist, Noam Chomsky, researchers have found that the similarities among languages are more profound than the differences. Languages whose grammars seem completely incompatible may in fact be structurally almost identical, except for a difference in one simple rule. The discovery of these rules and how they may vary promises to yield a linguistic equivalent of the Periodic Table of the Elements: a single framework by which we can understand the fundamental structure of all human language. This is a landmark breakthrough both within linguistics, which will herewith finally become a full-fledged science, and in our understanding of the human mind.

The Child's Discovery of the Mind (The Developing Child)

The Child’s Discovery of the Mind (The Developing Child)

$7.48

Three-year old Emily greets her grandfather at the front door: "We’re having a surprise party for your birthday! And it’s a secret!" We may smile at incidents like these, but they illustrate the beginning of an important transition in children’s lives–their development of a "theory of mind." Emily certainly has some sense of her grandfather’s feelings, but she clearly doesn’t understand much about what he knows, and surprises–like secrets, tricks, and ties all depend on understanding and manipulating what others think and know. Jean Piaget investigated children’s discovery of the mind in the 1920s and concluded that they had little understanding before the age of six. But over the last twenty years, researchers have begun to challenge his methods and revise his conclusions. In The Child’s Discovery of the Mind, Janet Astington surveys this lively area of research in developmental psychology. Sometime between the ages of two and five, children begin to have insights into their own mental life and those of others. They begin to understand mental representation–that there is a difference between thoughts in the mind and things in the world, between thinking about eating a cookie and eating a cookie. This breakthrough reflects their emerging capacity to infer other people’s thoughts, wants, feelings, and perceptions from words and actions. They come to understand why people act the way they do and can predict how they will act in the future, so that by the age of five, they are knowing participants in social interaction. Astington highlights how crucial children’s discovery of the mind is in their social and intellectual development by including a chapter on autistic children, who fail to make this breakthrough. "Mind" is a cultural construct that children discover as they acquire the language and social practices of their culture, enabling them to make sense of the world. Astington provides a valuable overview of current research and of the consequences of this discovery’ for intellectual and social development.

The Language of Life

The Language of Life

$20.98

Cells talk—and scientists are listening. One of the most intriguing topics in molecular biology, biochemical communication is the cornerstone of modern medicine and the mainstay of cutting-edge pharmaceutical research. For nearly a century, researchers have been straining to hear the whispered conversations among cells, hoping to master the basics of their language. They know that if we can decipher and translate this cellular chatter, we have the potential for sending signals of our own that could repair wounds, reduce cholesterol, control insulin levels, or even block the reproduction of cancer cells. The possibilities are extraordinary. The Language of Life reveals the private conversations of cells. In place of words, however, cells use chemicals, linking molecule to molecule to construct sentences that obey formal rules of grammar and syntax as binding as those that govern our own spoken and written language. Through the exchange and interpretation of chemical signals, they report every newsworthy event, record every memory, respond to every bodily injury. If you’ve ever wondered how your body copes with stress and change, why you can’t lose weight, or shake unreasonable fears; if you’ve pondered the origins of cancer or the epidemic of diabetes; or if you’ve wished for a glimpse into the future of medicine, this is a book you must read. Debra Niehoff examines the communication breakdowns that underlie some of our most common and intractable disorders and shows how intervening in these crises by sending signals of our own not only gives us the drugs to cure what ails us, but promises more effective and better targeted medications in the future. The Language of Life blends the vision of science with the poetry of life itself. It is a fantastic story of discovery that artfully conveys the epic of the developing embryo, the miracle of the human brain, and the stories of battles waged by cells on the front lines of a never-ending war against disease.

FUSANG OR, THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA

$24.48

Was the west coast of North America visited by travelers from China in the depths of antiquity? Ancient Asian documents provide extraordinary evidence that they did. For this intriguing 1875 book, folklorist Leland collected various interpretations and analyses of the writings of Chinese Buddhist missionary Hoei-Shin, who describes a voyage to the land of "Fusang" a millennium before Columbus that appears to describe the terrain, the cultures, and the peoples of the Pacific Northwest. A number of arguments by several experts build the case for this early "discovery" of America in a work that will fascinate students of global history. American journalist CHARLES GODFREY LELAND (1824-1903) was editor of Continental Monthly during the Civil War and coined the term emancipation as an alternative to abolition, but he is best remembered for his books on ethnography, folklore, and language, including The Gypsies (1882), The Hundred Riddles of the Fairy Bellaria (1892), and Aradia: Gospels of the Witches (1899).

Two of Chomsky’s most famous and accessible works available in an affordable and attractive edition.Described by the New York Times as "arguably the most important intellectual alive," Noam Chomsky is known throughout the world for his highly influential writings on language and politics. Featuring two of Chomsky’s most popular and enduring books in one omnibus volume, On Language contains some of the noted linguist and political critic’s most informal and accessible work to date, making it an ideal introduction to his thought. In Part I, Language and Responsibility (1979), Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking through a series of interviews with Mitsou Ronat, the noted French linguist. In Part II, Reflections on Language (1975), Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language.

A Modern Theory Of Language Evolution

A Modern Theory Of Language Evolution

$28.48

The discipline of linguistics is a perfect example of the limitations of the modern academy. The combination of social taboos that make certain subject matter unfit for general knowledge and discovery, and the ever-narrowing specialization of scientists leaves us with an intellectual institution that can no longer do anything but apply, repair, and justify the dogma of Victorian Cosmology that is the rule all must follow. Linguistics should be one of the most interesting subjects, considering it is the study of our most valuable and revealing cultural asset, language. However, recent publications from the linguistic department for public consumption have been some of the most trivial and boring intellectual expositions that have ever been put between two covers. Using the entire database of science, we look at the acquisition of language and how it forms our cultural perspective on life, including theories of language evolution. We develop the theory of the evolution of language from song, one of the few suppositions that Charles Darwin actually got right. From this basis we move on to the roots of Proto-Indo-European, which we call Bhear Tongue. Bhear Tongue is essentially the Eurasian language family dimly perceived by one of the greatest linguists of the twentieth century, Joseph Greenberg. From this perspective we can now retell the tribal stories from Iberia to Siberia, showing a common origin and motivation for human science and religion.

In 1974 in a remote region of Ethiopia, Donald Johanson, then one of America’s most promising young paleoanthropologists, discovered "Lucy", the oldest, best preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ever found. This discovery prompted a complete reevaluation of previous evidence for human origins. In the years since this dramatic discovery Johanson has continued to scour East Africa’s Great rift Valley for the earliest evidence of human origins. In 1975 this team unearthed the "First Family", an unparalleled fossil assemblage of 13 individuals dating back to 3.2 million years ago; and in 1986 at the Rift’s most famous location, Olduvai Gorge, this same team discovered a 1.8 million-year-old partial adult skeleton that necessitated a reassessment of the earliest members of our own genus Homo. Johanson’s fieldwork continues unabated and recently more fossil members of Lucy’s family have been found, including the 1992 discovery of the oldest, most complete skull of her species, with future research now planned for 1996 in the virtually unexplored regions of the most northern extension of the Rift Valley in Eritrea. From Lucy to Language is a summing up of this remarkable career and a stunning documentary of human life through time on Earth. It is a combination of the vital experience of field work and the intellectual rigor of primary research. It is the fusion of two great writing talents: Johanson and Blake Edgar, an accomplished science writer, editor of the California Academy of Sciences’ Pacific Discovery, and co-author of Johanson’s last book, Ancestors. From Lucy to Language is one of the greatest stories ever told, bracketing the timeline between bipedalism and human language. Part I addresses the central issues facing anyone seeking to decipher the mystery of human origins. In this section the authors provide answers to the basics — "What are our closest living relatives?" — tackle the controversial — "What is race?" — and contemplate the imponderables — "Why did consciousness evolve?" From Lucy to Language is an encounter with the evidence. Early human fossils are hunted, discovered, identified, excavated, collected, preserved, labeled, cleaned, reconstructed, drawn, fondled, photographed, cast, compared, measured, revered, pondered, published, and argued over endlessly. Fossils like Lucy have become a talisman of sorts, promising to reveal the deepest secrets of our existence. In Part II the authors profile over fifty of the most significant early human fossils ever found. Each specimen is displayed in color and at actual size, most of them in multiple views. With them the authors present the cultural accoutrements associated with the fossils: stone tools which evidence increasing sophistication over time, the earliest stone, clay, and ivory art objects, and the culminating achievement of the dawn of human consciousness — the magnificent rock and cave paintings of Europ…

Agrochemical Discovery

Agrochemical Discovery

This book provides a unique and current look at the process of discovery in the field of crop protection. As many plants are able to resist various control agents, it is necessary to look for entirely new active types of compounds. The book examines combinatorial chemistry approaches, long used in medicinal discovery, to find new agrochemical types. Applications in modifying plants to provide their own crop protection or enhanced yeild and quality are discussed. There is also a review of natural products, which are finding increased use in the development of new means and types of crop control agents.

Human and machine discovery are gradual problem-solving processes of searching large problem spaces for incompletely defined goal objects. Research on problem solving has usually focused on searching an `instance space’ (empirical exploration) and a `hypothesis space’ (generation of theories). In scientific discovery, searching must often extend to other spaces as well: spaces of possible problems, of new or improved scientific instruments, of new problem representations, of new concepts, and others. This book focuses especially on the processes for finding new problem representations and new concepts, which are relatively new domains for research on discovery. Scientific discovery has usually been studied as an activity of individual investigators, but these individuals are positioned in a larger social structure of science, being linked by the `blackboard’ of open publication (as well as by direct collaboration). Even while an investigator is working alone, the process is strongly influenced by knowledge and skills stored in memory as a result of previous social interactions. In this sense, all research on discovery, including the investigations on individual processes discussed in this book, is social psychology, or even sociology.

The Secret Language of Dreams

The Secret Language of Dreams

$3.48

The interpretation of dreams and the images that pervade them is a perennially popular subject that has challenged philosophers, psychiatrists, and lay people for centuries. In The Secret Language of Dreams, author and psychologist David Fontana combines the theories of Freud, Jung, and others — as well as his own years of experience in leading dream work-shops — with a unique, visual approach to dreams and dream symbolism. At the heart of this informative and accessible volume is a 100-page "dream directory" — an illustrated guide to common dream motifs, organized under both thematic headings (such as "Anxiety," "Change and Transition," and "Sexuality") and symbol headings (such as "Flying," "The Body," and "Animals") to help readers unlock the meanings behind the images in their dreams and to better understand their significance. Complete with a chapter on utilizing the coded messages of dreams to foster self-discovery and personal enrichment, this fascinating and imaginative look at the mysterious landscape of dreams is both an enlightening reference and a resourceful gift for the inquiring reader.
