Where can I learn new languages?

I want to learn to speak Gaelic, but im not sure where I can go or what sites I can use. If there anyway I could learn for free, which course I'm going to happen, that would be great! I want to eventually be able to speak fluently so I need to start early, before I lose my motivation.

Dictionary of Languages

Approximately how many languages compose the Bantu language group of central and southern Africa? What is the name of the language spoken in Hawaii by an estimated two thousand people? What Western European language is not known to be related to any other language family in the world — and is considered by linguists to be one of the most difficult to learn? These are only a few of the questions language lovers, linguists, and lay readers will be able to answer with the Dictionary of Languages — an easy-to-navigate, authoritative guide to the world’s languages and language groups at the end of the twentieth century. Andrew Dalby had the needs and interests of general readers in mind when he compiled this comprehensive reference work — most other language guides are written for scholars, and many include little or none of the absorbing social, cultural, geographic, and historical details that are brought together here.In the Dictionary of Languages, readers will find:?a selection of four hundred languages and language groups, arranged alphabetically, with rich, detailed descriptions of the genesis, development, and current status of each;?more than two hundred maps displaying where the languages are spoken today;?sidebars showing alphabets, numerals, and other enriching facts?a comprehensive index listing additional languages, guiding readers to the nearest language groups with full writeups and maps;?charts breaking down large language groups — such as Bantu or Austroasiatic languages — by geographic region and approximate number of speakers. In a world where geopolitical boundaries often explain little about the people that live within them, where we may read about Kurd and Khmer in the same newspaper and be expected to be conversant about each — if not conversant in each — Dalby’s single, information-packed volume helps us make sense of the rich mosaic of world languages.

Milton's Languages

Milton’s Languages

$49.98

Milton’s poetry is one of the glories of the English language, and yet it owes everything to Milton’s widespread knowledge of other languages: he knew ten and wrote in four. In Milton’s Languages, John K. Hale examines Milton’s language-related arts, giving all relevant texts in the original and in translation, and then traces the impact of Milton’s multilingualism on his major English poems. Hale argues convincingly that only by understanding Milton’s choice among languages can we grasp where Milton’s own unique–and highly influential–form of English originated.

Programming Languages

Programming Languages

$3.98

Exceptionally comprehensive in approach, this book explores the major issues in both design and implementation of modern programming languages and provides a basic introduction to the underlying theoretical models on which these languages are based. The emphasis throughout is on fundamental concepts—readers learn important ideas, not minor language differences–but several languages are highlighted in sufficient detail to enable readers to write programs that demonstrate the relationship between a source program and its execution behavior–e.g., C, C++, JAVA, ML, LISP, Prolog, Smalltalk, Postscript, HTML, PERL, FORTRAN, Ada, COBOL, BASIC SNOBOL4, PL/I, Pascal. Begins with a background review of programming languages and the underlying hardware that will execute the given program; then covers the underlying grammatical model for programming languages and their compilers (elementary data types, data structures and encapsulation, inheritance, statements, procedure invocation, storage management, distributed processing, and network programming). Includes an advanced chapter on language semantics–program verification, denotational semantics, and the lambda calculus. For computer engineers and others interested in programming language designs.

If you are looking for a book that quickly and concisely provides you with a translation guide between these three major languages, then you want to take a good look at this book. — Steven Mandel, .NET Developer’s Journal The .NET Languages: A Quick Translation Guide answers two questions posed by the introduction of the .NET Framework: "How do I quickly upgrade my skills to this new language?" and "How do I understand the code that another developer has written?" Author Brian Bischof offers a complete translation guide for converting programs among the three primary Microsoft languages: Visual Basic 6.0, Visual Basic .NET, and C#. Bischof makes it easy for the thousands of Visual Basic 6.0 programmers today to take the knowledge they already have and use it to write for the .NET platform. Each chapter is laid out in a clear and concise format. Most chapters begin with a syntax conversion chart displaying how each language translates into the other languages. Included are detailed points explaining these conversions. Each chapter ends with a fully comprehensive example, written in each language, that demonstrates that particular chapters concepts. This provides you with all the information you need for converting your programs: quick lookup charts, detailed explanations, and thorough examples. Nothing is left out. With the help of The .NET Languages: A Quick Translation Guide, programmers will quickly learn how to build a wide range of applications for the new Microsoft .NET platform.

Electronic Chips & Systems Design Languages (The Chdl Series)

$259.48

Electronic Chips & Systems Design Languagesoutlines and describes the latest advances in design languages. The challenge of System on a Chip (SOC) design requires designers to work in a multi-lingual environment which is becoming increasingly difficult to master. It is therefore crucial for them to learn, almost in real time, from the experiences of their colleagues in the use of design languages and how these languages have become more advanced to cope with system design. System designers, as well as students willing to become system designers, often do not have the time to attend all scientific events where they could learn the necessary information. This book will bring them a selected digest of the best contributions and industry strength case studies. All the levels of abstraction that are relevant, from the informal user requirements down to the implementation specifications, are addressed by different contributors. The author, together with colleague authors who provide valuable additional experience, presents examples of actual industrial world applications. Furthermore the academic concepts presented in this book provide excellent theories to student readers and the concepts described are up to date and in so doing provide most suitable root information for Ph.D. postgraduates.

Learning to Read Across Languages

Learning to Read Across Languages

$48.98

This book systematically examines how learning to read occurs in diverse languages, and in so doing, explores how literacy is learned in a second language by learners who have achieved at least basic reading skills in their first language. As a consequence of rapid globalization, such learners are a large and growing segment of the school population worldwide, and an increasing number of schools are challenged by learners from a wide variety of languages, and with distinct prior literacy experiences. To succeed academically these learners must develop second-language literacy skills, yet little is known about the ways in which they learn to read in their first languages, and even less about how the specific nature and level of their first-language literacy affects second-language reading development. This volume provides detailed descriptions of five typologically diverse languages and their writing systems, and offers comparisons of learning-to-read experiences in these languages. Specifically, it addresses the requisite competencies in learning to read in each of the languages, ,how language and writing system properties affect the way children learn to read, and the extent and ways in which literacy learning experience in one language can play a role in subsequent reading development in another. Both common and distinct aspects of literacy learning experiences across languages are identified, thus establishing a basis for determining which skills are available for transfer in second-language reading development. Learning to Read Across Languages is intended for researchers and advanced students in the areas of second-language learning, psycholinguistics, literacy, bilingualism, and cross-linguistic issues in language processing.

Growing Up with Two Languages

Growing Up with Two Languages

$31.48

The lives of many families involve contact with more than one language and culture on a daily basis. These children can potentially become proficient in both the languages around them, provided they receive enough input in both languages. Growing up with Two Languages is aimed at the many parents and professionals who feel uncertain about the best way to go about helping children to gain maximum benefit from the situation. Every family’s situation is different, but there is a good deal that parents can do to make life with two languages easier for their children. Families often establish an informal system for deciding who speaks what language in which situation. Consistency in sticking to the system will be helpful to the child, especially at the beginning. The "one person-one language" system, where each person speaks one of the languages (usually his/her native language) to the child and the "minority language at home" system, where the entire family speaks the language which is not spoken in the community at home are two of the most common systems. There are, however, as many variations on these systems as there are families. There is no right or wrong way – here each family has to find its own system. Growing up with Two Languages is illustrated by glimpses of life from interviews with fifty families from all around the world. The trials and rewards of life with two languages and cultures are discussed in detail, and followed by practical advice on how to support the child’s linguistic development.

Genes, Peoples, and Languages

Genes, Peoples, and Languages

$7.98

Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza was among the first to ask whether the genes of modern populations contain a historical record of the human species. Cavalli-Sforza and others have answered this question–anticipated by Darwin–with a decisive yes. Genes, Peoples, and Languages comprises five lectures that serve as a summation of the author’s work over several decades, the goal of which has been nothing less than tracking the past hundred thousand years of human evolution.Cavalli-Sforza raises questions that have serious political, social, and scientific import: When and where did we evolve? How have human societies spread across the continents? How have cultural innovations affected the growth and spread of populations? What is the connection between genes and languages? Always provocative and often astonishing, Cavalli-Sforza explains why there is no genetic basis for racial classification.

Imagining to Learn is an important book…The ideas are accessible, the examples cogent, and the analysis innovative. – Harvard Educational ReviewIf you are interested in creating an integrated learning environment in which students become deeply engaged in reading, writing, and inquiry while they explore the ethical dimensions of the curriculum, then this highly accessible book will be invaluable to you. In Imagining to Learn, Jeffrey Wilhelm and Brian Edmiston demonstrate how drama taps into the imagination to create powerful learning contexts. Imagining to Learn moves drama into the mainstream of elementary and middle school teaching, learning, and curriculum. It is filled with examples of how teachers and students together can create contexts that tap into students’ energies, abilities, and questions–contexts where students can discover a reason to read, a need to think, and a community that cares about their ideas. Readers will discover new methodologies and techniquesthat are rarely used in the U.S. They will also become familiar with drama as a method of performance-based assessment and ways to engage in research with students. The book shows how to adapt these methods into a flexible set of strategies to help students read with better comprehension, learn sophisticated and abstract content, explore values, and forge new understandings.Drama, as Wilhelm and Edmiston use it, enables students to "see" what they are reading and learning, create mental models and coherent networks of thought, apply and play out possibilities and consequences in a field of safety. The stories in this book demonstrate that drama can be easily introduced to students and successfully used by both beginning and experienced teachers.

Chatting to Learn

Chatting to Learn

$111.48

Primary and secondary school students, college students, and corporate employees are all engaging more and more in some form of online or blended online/face-to-face education. Given the large number of pedagogical and design choices that we must make, however, where do we begin when designing new environments? This book argues that it is important for us to consider how technological design choices interact with pedagogical choices and cognitive states to affect learning behaviors. Specifically, this book focuses on synchronous, text-based chat and asks two questions: first, since research has often reported that chat environments promote conversational equity, which features of this technology seem to help create conversational equity; and second, how this change impacts the content of small group discussions. Using ethnographic-style observations and quasi-experimental studies, this book shows how changing conversational media influences (or does not) the resulting discussion among students. Based on these findings, Chatting to Learn examines the broader implications for the design of conversational environments, whether for educational or business use.

Learning Artificial Languages

Learning Artificial Languages

$90.48

If Universal Grammar (UG) can aid adult second language acquisition an important question arises: are linguistic principles that are not active in the native language also accessible to second language learners? This question of adult accessibility to UG is addressed by investigating whether a specific phonological principle that does not exist in the subjects’ native language is accessible to adult learners. Artificial languages were constructed to compare the acquisition of a stress system that follows a natural phonological principle with one that is almost identical to the same principle, but differs in one feature, thus making it an "unnatural" system. If second language learners have access to innate universal linguistic principles they should be better able to learn the natural rule over the unnatural one. The positive results lend support to the idea of adult second language learners having access to UG. This book should be of interest to educators and researchers in the fields of artificial language learning, second language acquisition and phonological stress or those with a general interest in laboratory phonology.

In 1992, George Wood left the ivory tower of academia to become the principal of a poor and struggling high school in rural Ohio. In a few short years, he made Federal Hocking High one of the top schools in its region–and a model for what can be done when a principal, teachers, parents, and students put their minds together to creating change. As a result of Wood’s innovative and sometimes radical ideas, attendance, GPAs, and graduation rates are all up at Federal Hocking High. It has been acknowledged that American education must radically change if the country wants to compete in the 21st century. This unique book about public schooling does not focus on policy decisions or legislative debate, but rather on the real lives of a dedicated principal and the teachers and students in his school. Where most books on education focus solely on what’s wrong with our schools, A Time to Learn focuses on how to make it right. It is a clarion call to anyone who believes in the future of our children. * The subject of education in America and what can be done about it is both timely and volatile. * There is a huge audience for this book: more than one and a half million high school teachers and more than 40,000 high school principals are employed in the United States. * George Wood’s first book, Schools that Work, established him as an expert on reform.

The Semitic languages are a family of languages spoken by more than 370 million people across much of the Middle East, where they probably originated, and North and East Africa. They constitute the northeastern subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic languages, and the only branch of this group spoken in Asia. The most widely spoken Semitic language today is Arabic (206 million speakers), followed by Amharic (27 million speakers), Hebrew (7.5 million speakers), and Tigrinya (6.75 million speakers). Semitic languages were among the earliest to attain a written form, with Akkadian writing beginning in the middle of the third millennium BC. The term "Semitic" for these languages, after Shem son of Noah, is etymologically a misnomer in some ways, but is nonetheless standard. This is the first general survey of the Semitic languages, including the Arab and Aramaic dialects and various languages of Ethiopia.

One such language is D, which provides developers with the speed of languages such as C and C++ combined with the power and flexibility of languages such as Ruby and Python. Learn to Tango with D introduces you to the powerful D language, with special attention given to the Tango software library. A concise yet thorough overview of the language’s syntax and features is presented, followed by an introduction to Tango, the popular general–purpose library you’ll find invaluable when building your D applications. Authored by prominent D developers Kris Bell, Lars Ivar Igesund, Sean Kelly, and Michael Parker, this book supplies not only the knowledge required to begin building your own D applications, but also the insight these authors have acquired due to their extensive experience working with and participating in the development of the D language. What you’ll learn Gain a solid understanding of the D programming language and the companion Tango library. How to leverage the open source Tango library to build robust cross–platform applications. Why the combination of D and Tango can be the best option for your next application. Who is this book for? Programmers wishing to learn more about the D language and the Tango library.

The Acquisition of Two Languages from Birth

The Acquisition of Two Languages from Birth

$59.98

This book deals with the question of how children exposed to two languages simultaneously from birth learn to speak those two languages. After a critical and comprehensive survey of most of the literature on the subject, the author concludes that empirically well-documented knowledge in this area is very scant indeed. The core of the book concerns a naturalistic study of a Dutch-English bilingual girl around the age of three. The study’s main aim is to explore the nature of early bilingual morphosyntactic development. Detailed analyses of most aspects of this development show that a child who hears two separate languages spoken to her reflects this distinctness in the utterances she produces: each language is handled as a system in its own right. Furthermore, the young bilingual three-year-old greatly resembles her monolingual peers in either language. Both these findings, the author concludes, highlight the language-specific nature of the morphosyntactic development process. This book will interest linguists, psycholinguists, developmental psychologists, and child language specialists.

Lets Learn Kanji

Lets Learn Kanji

$21.98

Everyone agrees that it is possible to learn to speak Japanese in a reasonable amount of time, but no one has ever said that about reading and writing it. It is widely held that spoken and written Japanese require separate efforts by the student, as if these two aspects were in fact distinct languages. A first step toward alleviating this situation was taken by Yasuko Mitamura in 1985 with the publication of Let’s Learn Hiragana and Let’s Learn Katakana, which continue to help thousands of students every year to master these two forms of Japanese script. Now, Let’s Learn Kanji goes to the heart of the problem: the learning of kanji (i.e., Chinese characters as they are used in Japan). Not simply a brilliant exposition but also a workbook, it teaches the student how to write the basic strokes, how to put these together into full-fledged kanji, and how kanji function in the context of example sentences. Progress is continually checked, and the student is encouraged through quizzes and exercises. The result: 250 fundamental characters learned almost painlessly.

The latest Chrysalis Reader explores a facet of human nature that makes our species stand out: an insatiable curiosity, a desire to find answers. From the confessions of a professional student to the search for the miraculous, this collection of essays, short stories, poetry, and art wrestles with the question: What brings forth a questing spirit? This literary anthology looks inside the dynamic space where learning and teaching take place–as experienced in and sometimes in spite of the classroom, as well as beyond it. A teacher learns a hidden truth from what becomes for him an absurdity–the assigning of grades. A Midwestern community is forever changed by the courage of one student. A writer learns how to give the perfect dinner party by dining in the summers with the John Dos Passos family. Symbolic relationships between living and learning are evidened in Virginia Woolf’s neighborhood where, at an abandoned railway station, the significance of a diary entry brings a writer’s past into emotional focus. A humorist examines her disastrous early marriage to a sailor. A professional juggler adroitly handles the theoretical issues of multiple intelligences as played out in the business community. This issue will leave the reader with suggestions that may lead to the answers to some perennial questions: Which aspects of the learning process are universal, and which are individual? How do we foster lifelong learning? Why do we ask "Why"?

Martin Covington introduces the basic principles of motivation in a readable, nontechnical form as they apply to classroom learning. He argues against the popular notion that the problems existing in schools today stem primarily from a lack of student motivation. Instead, he asserts that students are motivated, but often for the wrong reasons. Traditional teaching methods, including conventional grading procedures and an emphasis on competition, can contribute to student demoralization, and Covington identifies the ways in which students respond to misguided incentives. The book suggests practical, concrete ways that teachers can transform classroom incentives into a positive desire to learn. It features a series of illustrative exercises at the end of each chapter and includes the latest research on gender and ethnic differences in motivation and learning in schools.

Learn Romani

Learn Romani

$29.95

This course of Romani language lessons is aimed at non-Romanis who want to learn Romani, and also at Romani people who wish to re-learn their ancestral language in its modern form. Romani has many dialects and no standard written form; this course is based on the Romani language as spoken by the Kalderash Roma in Europe, the US, Canada and Latin America — a native speaker of a particular Kalderash dialect can usually converse fluently with any other Kalderash speaker. Kalderash-Romani belongs to the Vlax-Romani group of dialects which evolved in central Europe before spreading all over the world. Speakers of Vlax-Romani dialects far outnumber speakers of any other Romani dialect worldwide. The phonetic system used is based on English and is designed to be understood by English speakers. Eighteen lessons take the student from the basic declensions of verbs and nouns, gradually building up vocabulary and grammar. Romani is a rich, living language, borrowing vigorously from the languages of the countries where its native speakers find themselves. Quotations from these native speakers are printed throughout the book to give a flavour of authenticity, as are poems, songs, proverbs and folk tales which the student will gradually be able to understand. Bibliographer Edward Proctor has provided a comprehensive list of source materials for further study of Kalderash and related dialects for the interested student.

A blessed king who strives for peace and justice; the round table where only the most gallant knights may sit; the dramatic quest for the Holy Grail; a fateful romance that destroys a dream: the epic story of King Arthur never fails to stir the imaginations of readers everywhere. This outstanding illustrated version adds to Sir Thomas Malory’s skillful recounting with original artwork that creates a unique vision of Camelot. Some of these breathtaking, elaborate watercolors and pens-and-inks have hung in museums, including the depiction of the Tintagel Castle, the Sword in the Stone, Merlin and Nimue, and Guenevere rescued from the stake. With remarkable accuracy, Anna-Marie Ferguson captures every nuance of the historical period-the knights’ shining armor, the intricate architecture, and the English forests with their abundant flora and fauna. Yet she also revels in the fantasy, with mysterious and magical landscapes, misty and moonlit. These legends have always been a treat for the mind-and now they are a feast for the eyes, too.

Where is Home? is a beautifully illustrated, bi-lingual Spanish/English children’s book that uses Gunter Pauli’s ZERI* Education model to teach children science. The book includes a teachers and parents guide and hands on activities that help children apply what they have learned.Gunter Pauli’s ZERI* Education model proposes that children, adolescents and young adults learn science in a way that gives them a more profound academic understanding at the same time that it helps develop their emotional intelligence, eco-literacy, and artistic/creative capacities. If children are to learn how to think, design, create, and dream in systems, then they must be exposed to systems thinking at an early age. Critical concepts become part of the child’s long-term memory and the student gains an intuitive grasp of the big picture. Then the learning of the specific tools, concepts, and principles involved become far more appealing. When students start with a story that integrates ethics, economics, biology, and mathematics, they will be drawn to studying those disciplines later on.Pauli’s work in sustainable manufacturing and agricultural became the catalyst for a major educational reform in Colombia. The strife and violence that exists in this country spawned an urgent desire on the part of college students to rebuild their society. The professors and engineering students at University EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia, eagerly embraced an integrated educational approach, including a compulsory course in biology for engineering majors. As the concept spread to other universities, the need to mold the earlier educational tracks in this new direction became apparent; first in a High School in Manizales where ZERI’s coffee and bamboo projects have taken off, and then in elementary schools which asked for a version of this program adapted to their level, comparable to the Garden School projects of the Center for Ecoliteracy.

Many students find themselves struggling to learn from texts because glitches in their reading process block learning, cause frustration, and impede success. The source of these problems can be difficult to discern. Where’s the Glitch? identifies why readers stumble and presents strategies designed to get them back on track and reading well. In Where’s the Glitch? Mary Shea shows you how to use modified running records (MRRs) to pinpoint where readers struggle with comprehension, to determine their current reading level, and to assess the specific skills they already possess. Shea explains how to take an MRR and get meaningful assessment data on the spot – even in a busy classroom. Then, she describes how to use that information to plan interventions that integrate instruction in literacy skills with content – area studies. As a result, students increase their reading fluency, overall achievement, and motivation to learn. In addition, Where’s the Glitch? includes a helpful tutorial CD that gets you started with MRRs. It contains recordings and transcripts of students reading aloud and retelling what they’ve read. After using the CD’s reproducible forms and scripts to practice, you’ll be familiar with each MRR step: marking miscues, analyzing miscues, calculating percent of accuracy, determining a fluency score, and evaluating retelling. "The most profound and satisfying book to date about the cutting edge of Ken Wilber’s integral vision. Reynolds leads us with clarity step by step through the most complex and subtle aspects of Wilber’s thinking about post modernity, post-metaphysical theory, the perennial philosophy, the Combs/Wilber matrix, and much more. Highly recommended for those who want to keep up with one of the great intellectual path-finders of our generation." -Allan Combs, Ph.D., University of North Carolina. author of The Radiance of Being: Understanding the Grand Integral Vision; Living the Integral Life "Ken Wilber continues to push the boundaries of knowledge to ever more profound and encompassing reaches, and Brad Reynolds continues to follow him and provide lucid, compelling commentaries. I am impressed by how thoroughly Reynolds has mastered Wilber’s work." -Roger Walsh, M.D., Ph.D., University of California, author of Essential Spirituality: The Seven Central Practices "Brad Reynolds has written an eloquent, passionate, beautiful book about my ideas. I believe it will help many people come to an appreciation of a more inclusive, more comprehensive, more integral way to think and feel about the world, and to find a happy, realized, awakened place in it." -Ken Wilber, author of A Theory of Everything Incorporating a vast range of disciplines and research, Wilber’s "Integral Vision" is currently defined as being an A-Q-A-L or "all-quadrant, all-level" approach to integral studies (the integration of body, mind, soul, and spirit with self, culture, and nature), therefore the reader will be introduced to Wilber’s new integral language and his underlying organizing framework, including his most recent "Phase-5." With this book the reader will learn the basic essentials needed to follow Wilber’s continual theoretical expansion (including his forthcoming books) and their pragmatic application, as well as reviewing his current public outreach, such as with the Integral Institute, Integral University, and his growing presence on the worldwide web. By simplifying the details of his complex metatheory, or "where Wilber’s coming from," the reader discovers how this integral approach is capable of uniting the knowledge of modern science with the depth and meanings of ancient mysticism, thus transforming the Great Chain of Being into a comprehensive post-metaphysical AQAL Matrix of Spirit-in-action. This evolutionary model also includes a cross-cultural integral psychology that seamlessly integrates East and West, thus clarifying today’s confusing spectrum of collective worldviews and the universal stages of individual growth, as well as much, much more. Indeed, the unprecedented integrative power of Wilber’s vision and its expanded influence in the first decade of the new millennium is laying the positive foundations for an "integral revolution," or better, a natural evolution to…

Languages and Their Status

$3.98

An introduction both to languages themselves and to their social role, Languages and Their Status gives insight into the meaning, value, and function of language within culture and into the ways language behavior varies and changes. It examines the part languages play in the evolution and structure of communities and, in turn, the ways languages are shaped by the social forces impinging on their speakers. Each chapter discusses what it means to be a speaker of a particular language and puts that language in context among the languages of the world. This volume is complemented by a second volume entitledLanguages and Their Speakers, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.

The Papuan Languages of New Guinea

The Papuan Languages of New Guinea

$49.98

This introduction to the descriptive and historical linguistics of the Papuan languages of New Guinea provide an accessible account of one of the richest and most diverse linguistic situations in the world. The Papuan languages number over 700 (or 20 per cent of the world’s total) in more than sixty language families. Less than a quarter of the individual languages have yet been adequately documented, and in this sense William Foley’s book might be considered premature. However, in the search for language universals and generalisations in linguistic typology, it would be foolhardy to neglect the information that is available. In this respect alone, the present volume, systematically organised on mainly typology principles, is particularly timely and useful. In addition, the processes of linguistic diffusion are present in New Guinea to an extent probably paralleled elsewhere on the globe. The Papuan Languages of New Guinea will be of interest not only to general and comparative linguists and to typologists, but also to sociolinguists and anthropologists for the information it provides on the social dynamics of language content.

Community Languages

Community Languages

$44.98

Without even considering the 150 Aboriginal languages still spoken, Australia has an unparalleled mix of languages other than English in common usage, languages often described by the term ‘community’. Drawing on census data and other statistics, this book addresses the current suitation of community languages in Australia, analysing which are spoken, by whom, and whereabouts. It focuses on three main issues: how languages other than English are maintained in an English speaking environment, how the structure of the languages themselves changes over time, and how the government has responded to such ethnolinguistic diversity. At a time of unprecedented awareness of these languages within society and a realisation of the importance of mutlilingualism in business, this book makes a significant contribution to understanding the role of community languages in shaping the future of Australian society.
