4 Steps to learn a new language
4 Steps to learn a new language
You might be very much curious to learn a new language may it be a foreign language like Spanish, French, and Portuguese etc. Or may a local language like Hindi, Tamil, etc. But might be facing some problems while learning. I myself was very passionate of learning new languages but I had to face a number of hurdles. This was a learning experience for me. So I am presenting some tips so that one can learn new language quickly and easily. Of course there is no quick and short method to learn a language other than “Practiceâ€. But even if we practice a lot we lag behind a number of times. To overcome these shortcomings here are a few STEPS.
- Alphabets :First get well aquaited with the alphabets of the language and their pronunciation as well as with the vowels and consonants, the phonetics and pronunciation.
- Learn the Vocabulary: Remember once you have a proper vocabulary then only you can frame a sentence. Here vocabulary I don’t mean any big complex words , I mean common group of words like numbers, vehicles, countries, animals, professions, terminology, diseases, etc. similar group of words.
- Learn how to frame a sentence: Once you are already equipped with a good vocabulary then its not difficult to frame a sentence. If you are lacking proper grammar still you can manage your grammar by expressing the word. Like if you need water you will say “Can I have some waterâ€. But If you don’t know sentence formation but you have a vocabulary then it is enough if you can say “Waterâ€. Then also others can understand that you need some water.
- Grammar :By saying this I mean grammar is not the first thing you should learn in learning a language. Key thing is banking your brain with plenty of vocabulary. But then having knowledge of grammar makes others treat you as a learned person and a professional. Also a proper grammar fetches you a lot of respect from others.
The above are the four basic steps which can make you and amateur in any new language. Other than these you can also follow few more tips.
- Try to implement the new words which you have learnt in the new language as much as you can so that you get familiar with it.
- Try to write some small articles in the new language you have learnt.
- Try having a native language or English to ‘new language’ dictionary.
- If possible try to get friends speaking the new language.
- Try to chat online with the new language on internet.
- Try to go through newspapers online in the new language.
- Try using google translator for help.
- Try to listen to the new language through various sources on internet. But this is only in the later stages of learning.
Hope I have given you some useful tips to learning new language. Happy learning.

Why You Need a Foreign Language & How to Learn One $19.98 In the age of globalization, English-speakers have largely neglected the languages of others, trusting instead in the promise of an international version of English. In Why You Need a Foreign Language & How to Learn One, author Edward Trimnell makes a contrarian case for a renewed emphasis on foreign language skills in the United States, Great Britain, and elsewhere in the English-speaking world. Drawing on topics as wide-ranging as military intelligence and international business, Trimnell explains why our neglect of foreign languages makes us dangerously dependent on the language skills of others. The book also explores the "truth and the hype" about English as an international language, and explains the functional limitations of English as a global means of communication. Finally, the book describes techniques and resources that businesspersons and other professionals can use to acquire a language through independent study. |

Learning to Learn in a Second Language has been written specifically for all teachers of children for whom English is a second language, although it will be equally helpful to teachers of English speaking children. The book is based on the assumption that the classroom program is a major resource for language development, and that a responsive program takes into account the fact that children are not only learning a new language, but that they are learning in that language as well. It exemplifies current theories of second language development through a wide range of strategies and practical suggestions for the classroom teacher. |

Working under conditions that today we would consider primitive, he made himself into the supreme playwright. Exactly how does Shakespeare achieve his effects? Why does he continue to enthrall audiences performance after performance, night after night, century after century? By concentrating on a dozen of his best-known plays, and analyzing their structural and theatrical elements as well as their distinctive language, inventive plotting, and unique characters this book demystifies Shakespeare for all theater lovers. Language Play $19.98 In this exhilarating and often hilarious book, David Crystal examines why we devote so much time and energy to language games, how professionals make a career of them, and how young children instinctively take to them. Crystal makes a simple argument-that since playing with language is so natural, a natural way to learn language is to play with it-while he discusses puns, crosswords, lipograms, comic alphabets, rhymes, funny voices taken from dialect and popular culture, limericks, anagrams, scat singing, and much more. |

Learn Prolog Now! $29.48 Prolog is a programming language, but a rather unusual one. “Prolog” is short for “Programming with Logic”, and the link with logic gives Prolog its special character. At the heart of Prolog lies a surprising idea: don’t tell the computer what to do. Instead, describe situations of interest, and compute by asking questions. Prolog will logically deduce new facts about the situations and give its deductions back to us as answers. Why learn Prolog? For a start, its “say what the problem is, rather than how to solve it” stance, means that it is a very high level language, good for knowledge rich applications such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and the semantic web. So by studying Prolog, you gain insight into how sophisticated tasks can be handled computationally. Moreover, Prolog requires a different mindset. You have to learn to see problems from a new perspective, declaratively rather than procedurally. Acquiring this mindset, and learning to appreciate the links between logic and programming, makes the study of Prolog both challenging and rewarding. Learn Prolog Now! is a practical introduction to this fascinating language. Freely available as a web-book since 2002 (see www.learnprolognow.org) Learn Prolog Now! has became one of the most popular introductions to the Prolog programming language, an introduction prized for its clarity and down-to-earth approach. It is widely used as a textbook at university departments around the world, and even more widely used for self study. College Publications is proud to present here the first hard-copy version of this online classic. Carefully revised in the light of reader’s feedback, and now with answers to all the exercises, here you will find the essential material required to help you learn Prolog now. |

Why Didn’t I Learn This in College? $22.48 Because participants in our workshop series, Instruction for All Students, often ask, "Why didn’t we learn this in college?" that question provided the inspiration for the title of this new book for teachers new to the classroom. This title is in no way meant to condemn those who direct our collegiate experiences. The realities are that we may well have studied these topics and earned a good grade on a test over the theoretical aspects of this information but had no classroom teaching experiences on which to hook the information, that we took an alternative approach to entering the profession, that our focus was elsewhere at the time or perhaps, in fact, it was not taught. Whatever the case may be, teachers new to the classroom clearly need support and a repertoire of effective teaching strategies during their first years of classroom work. Why Didn’t I Learn This in College? is based on the constructs that: + the best management program is a good instructional program, + if the end we have in mind is student learning, we do not want to concentrate on control and compliance but rather on building learning centered environments, and + we need efficient and effective organizational systems for ourselves, our students, and our classroom. |

Why? $30.48 Why? is a book about the explanations we give and how we give them–a fascinating look at the way the reasons we offer every day are dictated by, and help constitute, social relationships. Written in an easy-to-read style by distinguished social historian Charles Tilly, the book explores the manner in which people claim, establish, negotiate, repair, rework, or terminate relations with others through the reasons they give. Tilly examines a number of different types of reason giving. For example, he shows how an air traffic controller would explain the near miss of two aircraft in several different ways, depending upon the intended audience: for an acquaintance at a cocktail party, he might shrug it off by saying "This happens all the time," or offer a chatty, colloquial rendition of what transpired; for a colleague at work, he would venture a longer, more technical explanation, and for a formal report for his division head he would provide an exhaustive, detailed account. Tilly demonstrates that reasons fall into four different categories:Convention: "I’m sorry I spilled my coffee; I’m such a klutz." Narratives: "My friend betrayed me because she was jealous of my sister." Technical cause-effect accounts: "A short circuit in the ignition system caused the engine rotors to fail." Codes or workplace jargon: "We can’t turn over the records. We’re bound by statute 369." Tilly illustrates his topic by showing how a variety of people gave reasons for the 9/11 attacks. He also demonstrates how those who work with one sort of reason frequently convert it into another sort. For example, a doctor might understand an illness using the technical language of biochemistry, but explain it to his patient, who knows nothing of biochemistry, by using conventions and stories. Replete with sparkling anecdotes about everyday social experiences (including the author’s own), Why? makes the case for stories as one of the great human inventions. |

How and Why Language Matters in Evaluation $10.98 While attention to language issues is well accepted in social science research, serious consideration of language in evaluation research and practice has been limited. Yet, say the authors of this volume, significant contributions could be made to the theory, practice, and methods used by evaluators simply by understanding the important relationship between language and evaluation. This issue fills a void in the evaluation literature by illuminating the ways language shapes our understanding of social policies and programs we evaluate. The contributors-drawn from a range of diverse disciplines-consider why and how language is an evaluation issue and outline the conceptual and practical concerns it raises. Drawing from such varied examples as a statewide at-risk youth project, a Quebec welfare program, mixed-sex focus groups, and an urban tuberculosis screening program, the authors provide a balance of conceptual analysis and practical advice that clearly shows how careful attention to language can improve what evaluators do today as well as spark new and thoughtful discussion in the future. This is the 86th issue of the quarterly journals New Directions for Evaluation. |

Why Does Language Matter to Philosophy? $41.48 Many people find themselves dissatisfied with recent linguistic philosophy, and yet know that language has always mattered deeply to philosophy and must in some sense continue to do so. Ian Hacking considers here some dozen case studies in the history of philosophy to show the different ways in which language has been important, and the consequences for the development of the subject. There are chapters on, among others, Hobbes, Berkeley, Russell, Ayer, Wittgenstein, Chomsky, Feyerabend and Davidson. Dr Hacking ends by speculating about the directions in which philosophy and the study of language seem likely to go. The book will provide students with a stimulating, broad survey of problems in the theory of meaning and the development of philosophy, particularly in this century. The topics treated in the philosophy of language are among the central, current concerns of philosophers, and the historical framework makes it possible to introduce concretely and intelligibly all the main theoretical issues. |

WHY Do They Act That Way? $12.48 In this national bestseller, acclaimed, award-winning psychologist Dr. David Walsh explains exactly what happens to the human brain on the path from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Revealing the latest scientific findings in easy-to-understand terms, Dr. Walsh shows why moodiness, quickness to anger and to take risks, miscommunication, fatigue, territoriality, and other familiar teenage behavior problems are so common — all are linked to physical changes and growth in the adolescent brain. Why Do They Act That Way? is the first book to explain the changes in teens’ brains and show parents how to use this information to understand, communicate with, and stay connected to their kids. Through real-life stories, Dr. Walsh makes sense of teenagers’ many mystifying, annoying, and even outright dangerous behavioral difficulties and provides realistic solutions for dealing with everyday as well as severe challenges. Dr. Walsh’s techniques include, among others: sample dialogues that help teens and parents talk civilly and constructively with each other, behavioral contracts, and Parental Survival Kits that provide practical advice for dealing with issues like curfews, disrespectful language and actions, and bullying. With this arsenal of strategies, parents can help their kids learn to control impulses, manage erratic behavior, cope with their changing bodies, and, in effect, develop a second brain. |

I Am My Language $29.48 “I am my language,” says the poet Gloria Anzaldúa, because language is at the heart of who we are. But what happens when a person has more than one language? Is there an overlay of language on identity, and do we shift identities as we shift languages? More important, what identities do children construct for themselves when they use different languages in particular ways? In this book, Norma González uses language as a window on the multiple levels of identity construction in children—as well as on the complexities of life in the borderlands—to explore language practices and discourse patterns of Mexican-origin mothers and the language socialization of their children. She shows how the unique discourses that result from the interplay of two cultures shape perceptions of self and community, and how they influence the ways in which children learn and families engage with their children?s schools. González demonstrates that the physical presence of the border profoundly affects the practices and ideologies of Mexican-origin women and children. She then argues that language and cultural background should be used as a basis for building academic competencies, and she demonstrates why the evocative/emotive dimension of language should play a major part in studies of discourse, language socialization, and language ideology. Drawing on women?s own narratives of their experiences as both mothers and borderland residents, I Am My Language is firmly rooted in the words of common people in their everyday lives. It combines personal odyssey with cutting-edge ethnographic research, allowing us to hear voices that have been muted in the academic and public policy discussions of “what it means to be Latina/o” and showing us new ways to connect language to complex issues of education, political economy, and social identity. |

How Language Works $23.98 A parrot uncomprehendingly rattles off a string of words learned by rote. And we marvel! Yet we seem to take our own astonishing linguistic powers for granted?the ability to speak, listen, and understand, to read and write. We all understand why language works?we have to communicate to survive?and now David Crystal, the world authority on language, shows us how. How are languages born? How does conversation work? How do we learn how to read? How do gestures and tone of voice impact communication? And what happens when a language goes wrong? How Language Works answers questions about the innumerable facets of language, from how we absorb all those grammatical rules to how we decide if a word is rude or polite. Whether looking at the whistle languages of the Canary Islands, or describing the layout of the human throat; whether assessing the importance of eyebrow flashes in conversation, or showing how the way we speak betrays who we want to be?How Language Works is a book that will enrich the lives of everyone who reads it. Illuminating and intriguing, this landmark book is the ultimate guide to the mysteries of the language we all use every day. |

Homonyms, Why English Suffers $3.98 Those of us who grew up learning the English language had a great advantage over everyone else who attempts to learn English as a foreign language. We had context, the meaning within the syntax of sentences which helped us to understand what many English words mean, even though they sound the same as other words, but have different meanings and are usually spelled differently. They are the dreaded.…HOMONYMS. From the placement of words within a sentence, we came to naturally understand such sentences as, "Angus is too thrifty to spend two dollars." It is no wonder that homonyms present a major obstacle to the millions of people who confront the English language for the first time, having learned and used another language. Here is a book which concisely isolates the most common homonyms, explaining their different meanings and spellings, even though they are pronounced the same. While it should prove a useful tool for those acquiring English as a new language, I am also hoping it will be entertaining as well… Life is too short… This book intends to be a practical and thoughtful guide, but does not attempt encyclopedic scope or lofty academic scholarship. To one who masters English homonyms, the rest of the vocabulary is more easily acquired. NOTE: The words listed herein are described briefly. There may be more meanings (usages) than those listed. Also, there may be more words that could have been included (but that would have stopped you from using your thinking cap). For example; I have a brother-in-law whose name is "Lint" and I wouldn’t want his name to be linked with pocket fluff. But overall I think you will get the point—just have fun with what follows. |

No Place to Learn $3.48 The Red Cross is studied and criticized. The Royal Family is studied and criticized. Churches and hospitals are studied and criticized. Canadian universities are seldom studied and criticized and are worse off for this neglect. This book seeks to repair this damage by casting a critical eye on how Canadian universities work – or fail to work.Arguing that too much emphasis is placed on specialized research and too little on teaching, No Place to Learn contends that students seeking higher education in Canada are being short-changed. In clear, non-technical language, the book explains the priorities of Canadian universities and outlines several practical reforms that would greatly improve them. If you’ve never known what deans do, what tenure is, and what professors do when they’re not teaching, No Place to Learn is a must-read: an eye-opening introduction that raises serious questions about the state of higher education in Canada.Current students, prospective students, and their parents will not want to miss this book, while professors and administrators would be wise to take note of it. |

Language Development and Learning to Read $24.48 Research on reading has tried, and failed, to account for wide disparities in reading skill even among children taught by the same method. Why do some children learn to read easily and quickly while others, in the same classroom and taught by the same teacher, don’t learn to read at all? In Language Development and Learning to Read, Diane McGuinness examines scientific research that might explain these disparities. She focuses on reading predictors, analyzing the effect individual differences in specific perceptual, linguistic, and cognitive skills may have on a child’s ability to read. Because of the serious methodological problems she finds in the existing research on reading, many of the studies McGuinness cites come from other fields — developmental psychology, psycholinguistics, and the speech and hearing sciences — and provide a new perspective on which language functions matter most for reading and academic success. McGuinness first examines the phonological development theory — the theory that phonological awareness follows a developmental path from words to syllables to phonemes — which has dominated reading research for thirty years, and finds that research evidence from other disciplines does not support the theory. McGuinness then looks at longitudinal studies on the development of general language function, and finds a "tantalizing connection" between core language functions and reading success. Finally, she analyzes mainstream reading research, which links reading ability to specific language skills, and the often flawed methodology used in these studies. McGuinness’s analysis shows the urgent need for a shift in our thinking about how to achieve reading success. |

Eager to Learn $27.48 Clearly babies come into the world remarkably receptive to its wonders. Their alertness to sights, sounds, and even abstract concepts makes them inquisitive explorers–and learners–every waking minute. Yet, for a variety of reasons, far too little attention is given to the quality of these crucial years. What will it take to provide better early education and care for our children between the ages of two and five? Eager to Learn explores this crucial question, synthesizing the newest research findings on how young children learn and the impact of early learning. Key discoveries in how young children learn are reviewed in language accessible to parents as well as educators. Perhaps most significant, the book documents how very early in life learning really begins. The book discusses: evidence for competing theories, models, and approaches in the field and a hard look at some day-to-day practices and activitiesgenerally used in preschool; the role of the teacher, the importance of peer interactions, and other relationships in the child’s life; learning needs of minority children, children with disabilities, and other special groups; approaches to assessing young children’s learning for the purposes of policy decisions, diagnosis of educational difficulties, and instructional planning; and preparation and continuing development of teachers. |

Learn to Earn $28.48 "Public companies are everywhere, and they surround you from morning to night. . . . Nearly everything you eat, wear, read, listen to, ride in, lie on, or gargle with is made by one. Perfume to penknives, hot tubs to hot dogs, nuts to nail polish are made by businesses that you can own." –from the Introduction. McDonald’s, The Gap, Circuit City, Gillette, CBS, and thousands more . . . anybody can own part of big and small companies. As companies grow and prosper, you can too. Whenever burgers are eaten, sweaters are purchased, batteries are used, and faces are shaved, you’ve got a piece of the action. From Alexander Hamilton to Warren Buffett, people have been making big money by investing in the corporations and institutions around them. Mutual-fund superstar Peter Lynch and author John Rothchild explain what’s not normally taught in high school –how the stock market helps you and how it helps the country. By understanding how and why the stock market works when you buy a share of a company or purchase a mutual fund, you can make informed –and profitable –decisions. Whether you’re saving for college, a house, a trip, or retirement, there is no better method to secure a sound financial future than to invest. Young or old, there is no better time to start investing than now. "Investing is fun. It’s interesting. It can put you on the road to prosperity for the rest of your life. . . ." Learn to Earn gives you the expert guidance you need to make the right start. Lynch and Rothchild cover the gamut on investment fundamentals and principles, from choosing stocks, to picking a broker, to reading an annual report. Learn to Earn reveals how to decipher the stock pages and how to evaluate the pros and cons of the five basic investment vehicles –savings accounts, collectibles, houses or apartments, stocks, and bonds. Yet, there is much more to investing than just the principles, and there is much more to Learn to Earn than just the fundamentals. Opportunity comes in many forms, from many sources, with many histories. Brimming with stories and parables, Lynch and Rothchild also explain: * Why the world as we know it would collapse without investors . . . * How capitalism, from the time of the American Revolution on, has shaped the past, and how that affects us today . . . * How Coke, Campbell’s Soup, Ben & Jerry’s, Microsoft, and other big companies got started, who gets rich from them, and how they got that way . . . * How to know the real story behind the price of a stock |

Schools That Learn $26.98 First published in 2000, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN introduced the groundbreaking Fifth Discipline organizational principles to the world of education. This comprehensive revision addresses the increasing challenges facing our educational system and presents practical advice on how schools can use the principles of organizational learning to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. Few would argue that schools today are in trouble. In the age of “No Child Left Behind,” when students, teachers, parents, and school boards are weighed down by increasing pressures, standardized tests are being used as “quick fixes,” school violence is growing, advances in science and technology threaten to outpace teachers’ effectiveness, and the average tenure of a school district superintendent is less than three years, SCHOOLS THAT LEARN offers much-needed advice on how we can overcome these persistent problems that threaten our educational system. Drawing upon experience and advice from prominent educators, teachers, principals, business and community leaders, parents, and students from across the country, the authors offer clear guidelines for how to implement the principles of organizational learning in the classroom, and explain why these practices work. The book features stories and anecdotes from the classroom and the community; charts, tables and diagrams to illustrate learning principles; individual and team exercises for both educators and students; and recommendations for related books, articles, Web sites, and other resources. This updated and revised edition of a decisive and influential work is invaluable for everyone involved in a dialogue about how to better educate our children in the twenty-first century. |
